Graves said that even though the dogs are trained to search and find items that could hurt fellow Soldiers, they are also a big morale booster.

“When we go out on some missions where the guys have been out in the field for three weeks with no hot water or hot chow, they will just brighten up when they see the dogs,” Graves said.

Army dog awarded for Iraq arms find
LONDON (AP) — Buster, a 6-year-old Springer spaniel, earned more than a pat on the head Tuesday when he was awarded Britain's highest animal bravery medal for his role in breaking a resistance cell in Iraq.

The British army canine received the Dickin Medal at a ceremony at London's Imperial Museum for discovering a cache of weapons and explosives in Safwan, southern Iraq, in March.

Ohhhh this brings tears to my eyes. There has long been a theory - well, more than a theory, really - that humans would not be as advanced as we are were it not for the help, assistance, bravery and loyalty of dogs. The same could also be said for horses, but dogs have helped humans in sooooo many ways. I read a really uplifting and yet heartbreaking article about the unsung heroes of 9/11 - the dogs who helped find all the bodies and search through the wreckage. Amazing. It's a pity I can't post a link to it - it was in an edition of `Dog's Life' magazine that I subscribe to.

Many dogs died blowing up Nazi tanks. This history has recently been included in school books for kids.
