US soldiers kill young girl in Iraq

BAGHDAD - U.S. soldiers fired a warning shot near a woman who "appeared to be signaling to someone" along a dangerous stretch of road north of Baghdad, but the bullet killed a young Iraqi girl, a military official said early Thursday.

The shooting took place Wednesday where several roadside bombs had recently been found in the volatile Diyala province. An exact location was not given in a military statement.

The girl appeared to be "around 10 years old," said Maj. Brad Leighton, a military spokesman.

There has been an increase in the use of women as suicide bombers in Iraq. But Leighton said preliminary reports indicated that soldiers didn't believe the woman posed a threat of being a bomber. Rather "they were afraid she was signaling to someone that the convoy was going by."

In its statement, the military said that "coalition forces fired a warning shot into a berm near a suspicious woman who appeared to be signaling to someone while the soldiers were in the area. A young girl was found behind the berm suffering from a gunshot wound."

Roadside bombs have been the biggest killer of American troops in Iraq.

Soldiers gave the girl medical attention and called for an evacuation. The girl died on the way to a medical facility, the statement said.

"Coalition forces take the loss of any innocent civilian life seriously and the incident will be thoroughly investigated," military spokesman Maj. Dan Meyers said in the statement.

But then again, why would you want to do that? Too busy trying to reclaim power for the democrats even at the expense of your own country? This is demonstrative of what democrats idea of supporting the troops means.

People zoom their cars at US troops, ignoring clear indications to stop. In this case, an accident occurs. Moral of story? When someone with a gun says stop, you stop.

Well it shows how desperate the situation is over there and how willingly the American's are to use their guns. I know there is a thin line for safety when in a 'war zone' and every precatuion must be taken, but American soldiers around the world are known as being trigger happy.

Tragic, but clearly unintentional.

You want trigger happy? Try Russians in Grozny, where they flattened the city through indiscriminate use of firepower.

Firing a *single round* that accidently kills a girl who was *behind a berm and couldn't be seen* hardly qualifies as trigger happy.

I don't think it's fair to disparage the military for this stuff; it's either a few bad-apples, or it's another problem arising from the dubious nature of the mission as a whole.

But isn't that the intention of the poster? And isn't that your intention by your own statement, "the dubious nature of the mission as a whole"? The nature of the mission is the mission of the military as a whole. So let's just disparage the entire mission. Must you have it both ways? To express the unfairness to disparage the military in one breath, then to unfairly disparage them in the next seems disingenuous to me.

Well, right, but your analysis suffers from a binary reasoning process.

The nature of the mission has our troops scouring urban centers where it can be very difficult to tell friend from foe.

That's not the fault of individual troops who are just doing their job.

I respect those inviduals, (except the puppy-tossers, etc) while at the same time think that their mission is dubious.

That mission was undertaken at the behest of the civillian leadership, and it's my duty as a citizen to analyze what they do.
