IF they knew who funded their trip then IMO they where using their offices to aid an enemy of the USA in a propaganda campaign....and they(who are still in office) should at the very least be forced to resign.
I wouldn't shock me if they knew Demcorats(esp. McDermitt...aka "Baghdad Jim") back then where rather actively looking to excuse Saddam Hussein.
