Icon4 Pentagon Funds Aid Polygamist Sect

Quote:
As a child-abuse investigation continues at a polygamous compound in Texas, NBC News has learned who helped fund the controversial sect.

It was the U.S. Department of Defense.

Freedom of Information Act documents obtained by NBC News show that the Pentagon awarded contracts of at least $1.5 million to two Utah-based companies owned and operated by senior officials of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or FLDS. The contracts, issued from 1998 to 2006, were for aircraft parts and other military equipment.

The Pentagon contracts were awarded to Utah Tool & Die and Western Precision, Inc., which operated in Utah. The president of Western Precision was Wendell Nielsen, described in multiple media accounts as a senior official in the FLDS religious sect, whose West Texas compound was raided by police earlier this month as part of a wide-ranging child-abuse investigation. Neilsen disappeared with church leader Warren Jeffs after Jeffs was put on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list in 2003. Jeffs, the sect's "prophet," was convicted last year on two counts of rape as an accomplice.

The records show that Western Precision continued to receive government contracts even after the well-publicized manhunt. And when Jeffs was captured in 2006, he was riding in an SUV registered to John C. Wayman, another Western Precision executive.

So how could federal funds have ended up aiding the FLDS church? According to an affidavit filed by Wendell Nielsen's son in a church-related court case, Western Precision gave the church up to $100,000 a month, a testament to the close ties between the manufacturing firm and the church itself.

Nope. No need to change the way the DoD does business.

I don't know whether this qualifies as an answer, but I'll give it a shot. . .

Goverment fund could have ended up in the FLDS church by Warren Jeffs little Welfare Scam. Since many, if not any of the wives of the FLDS are not legally married, they can, and they have been using the welfare system to get money as single-non working mothers, even though they do not exactly need the funds because they have a more than aboundous support group; the many many many many family members.

With contracts adding up to such a small amount ($1.5MM is VERY small), the level of due diligence by the DoD was likely very limited. Further, they don't ask what your religious affiliation is. That would be against the law.

1.5 million is enough to sustain a compound of pedophilia and law breaking.

The fact that it's "small" by comparison to the overall DoD contracting is irrelevent, except insofaras it demonstrates how these contracts are bloated and the system under which they're awarded is severely flawed.

DoD dispenses it as if it were nothing; and it's not so much the religion that is the red-flag, it's the little girls.

The article indicates their were personal relationships at the center of this deal.

That needs to be fleshed out.

I don't think with the whole seperation of church and state thing you have the right to ask people what their religion is nor can you base whether you give a company a contract on what religious groups or charities they might give to until such time as those/groups charities go down for something like this or some such. Just having one member, even a leader, convicted as an accomplice to rape doesn't disbar the whole organization.

It will, however, make the FBI take a look at you. Which may be how they got brought down.

How about some props for the FBI?

I just explained to you how it happened. I don't recall saying anything about it not being bloated or flawed. It's the freakin' government. Everything about the government is bloated and flawed. Defense worst of all.

So does the fraud rife within medicare and social security that makes $1.5 million look like a few pennies. Government inefficiency isn't news to most true conservatives.
