Desecrate? Honestly. This "military images are sacred" stuff is just over the top, IMO.
I expect the Catholic church to fetishize the bones of its saints -- to the extent that the head of Oliver Plunkett is
on display at a church in Ireland.
But turning military images into sacred relics is about five steps too far for me.
It's an iconic photograph, showing an emotional moment in a long and difficult war. But it's a photograph; It's not sacred.
I'm a graphic designer. I use military imagery all the time in designs. Trust me, it's not because I'm mocking or disrespecting the military. It's because military images are very powerful, and thus very effective.
I would be offended if the image were treated disrespectfully. It's not, unless you think *any* use of the image other than as an object of veneration is disrespectful.
The cover, in fact, is attempting to tap into the emotion of the image, suggesting that the battle against global warming may be just as long, difficult and important as World War II. It's not making a joke of it, and it's certainly not saying anything negative about the military or soldiers or what have you.
