Default Iraq tells the US it wants all troops back in barracks

Well if the Iraqis get their way the US soldiers will not be able to move freely about.

Treaty tensions mount as Iraq tells the US it wants all troops back in barracks

American troops in Iraq would be confined to their bases and private security guards subject to local law if Iraq gets its way in negotiations with the US over the future status of American forces...

May as well send them home if that would ever happen. No point of the troops working on their tans in Iraq.

I am surprised to hear this from the Iraqi government. Although the Iraqi army has steadily increased in size and capability I doubt it is capable of securing the cities.

But this is a European source and I've learned that they are even more antiwar than the US media and rarely let the truth get in the way of good propaganda.

I expect that the general outline is close to true but the bulk of the article is exagerated. Just look at the picture they chose to visually frame the story.

But I agree that if the Iraqi government wants the US out we should get out.

Just read the quotes:

Quote:
Ali al-Dabbagh, the Iraqi government spokesman, said that under the new deal US soldiers should be confined to the larger bases. “We do need the Americans to leave the cities and the streets,” he said. “They have to be there in the back and . . . in their camps. Whenever we ask them they will be ready to support and help.”
It's an important step and I think it must be done. It's time for the Iraqis to prove they can take care of themselves. Put the Americans in the barracks and let the Iraqis run the show. Since we don't know how well Iraq will succeed on their own, our soldiers should stick around in case chaos ensues. If progress is made over time, send our troops home.

This seems like an obvious step in giving back full-power to Iraq. My wife is learning how to drive. I didn't just drive her around with me a bit, explain the rules of the road, hand her the keys, and walk home. I'm in the passenger seat every day with my hand on the emergency brake.

Is this really hard to believe? Imagine if someone invaded the U.S. and got rid of the current government, then stuck around "to provide security" for years and years. How long would it take before you wanted them to go away so the American people could form their own government?

It is a conservative newspaper owned by Murdoch. Lets be careful with the generalizations.

i agree that US troops being stationed in bases,
and iraqi troops providing security for the country,
is exactly what we want to happen.
so if iraq really thinks theyre ready for it,
lets do it.
we'll only jump in when asked or provoked.

Its a result of winning.
Its not a negative if thats what you're trying to portray it as one. If so your not reading t.
They do not want them stuck in barracks never doing anything. They hope to take over the patrol grind and have US troops support them.

BTW this has been a core overall strategic goal of Bush's plan since the beginning despite the many changes since.
Iraq keep succeeding and Obama has been ignoring it...ouch.(elections in Iraq in October http://www.politicalforum.com/latest...ct-2008-a.html ..darn
McCain can point to massive successes in Iraq on a plan he helped push Bush into coupled with the fact he knows war, is considered a hero, is respected, etc. Obama is going to get clobbered with it

Iraq is already planning to put all US troops under Iraqi command, if anything that will make the US turn tails and run.
