180 Police Officers backed up by over 200 soldiers took part in the round up and arrest of suspected FLNC militants in Corsica over the last two days. Most of the militants are being held at a military camp in Borgo while one person is being held in Bastia and 5 (or possibly 6) have been transferred to Paris. One person has been released without charge. The Corsican Anti-Repression League (RAC) has called an emergency meeting at its headquarters tonight. There was serious rioting outside the camp last night with demonstrators from Corsica Libera and the RAC blocking roads and throwing petrol-bombs at police officers. A number of demonstrators were arrested.
The Police said that the arrests are in relation to an FLNC carbomb attack against a Police Barracks in Vescocato last July. In Southern Corsica another man was arrested in relation to a spate of attacks over the last two years in and around Ajaccio. An FLNC unit operating in the area has been responsible for a rocket attack against a barracks at Aspretto, a grenade attack against the Regional Prefect and the machine-gunning of the regional courthouse. The man has subsequently been released.
