Our understanding has gone to far and is now bringing forth to many problems.

It's political correctness gone mad! "Frustrated proud Germans"? "National pride"? "This kind of group"? Why can't we just call Nazis Nazis?

And, by the way, if you hamstring people - however briefly - they don't "bite" so much as "topple".

It actually is PC gone mad, regardless of your quip. History will repeat itself when the lessons are not learned. The pendulum swings in progressively wider arcs as momentum shifts.

We are seeing similar discontent here is the US regarding the border. For the most part the reaction here remains within lawful bounds, but the anger among the people is palpable.

Change my hamstring to a muzzle. Fit better?

Do you actually think, the problem in the Weimar Republic was Political Correctness?

No. What I am saying is, Germany's history in the early 20th century resulted in the country falling all over itself to atone, but in doing so you have also allowed yourselves to lose much of your ethnic identity, and now history will repeat itself because hatred is growing toward Muslims. The reality is it is the government which deserves to be the target.

My mother left Germany in the 1950's as a young woman, but she still retains tremendous national pride for the good parts of her heritage. It seems to me that these groups are simply reacting to losing their culture, and the more the government ignores the issue the angrier they will become. History will repeat if common sense does not win.

Germany did not lose ethnic identity because of Josephine Baker or Jazz music. The problem were too much of these "patriotic" idiots, who didn't want to stop to play war.

Exactly. Don't you see the irony of that?

I'm not saying bigotry is a good thing, I am saying it often results from frustration over feeling national identity is being erased. It's almost as though Germany pretends the country didn't even exist between 1900 and 1945. I understand the need to be introspective and work to keep the atrocities from ever occurring again, but such concepts can be taken too far and then hate groups rise up.

Just something to think about.

It was more a West German problem with all these flags, this changed during the last soccer world championship. Many people had flags there around this time.

Maybe this has been so in West Germany in the fiftees, but this time is a topic in German media. It is good for ratings.

East Germany was able to keep hate groups from rising up. West Germany went against the extreme forms. Unified Germany would be able to keep them all in line, too, but maybe they want to have some of them being legal to have better control about them. The legal ones are more nationalistic, at least officially. Pro NRW comes from Pro Koeln, they are legal, but the authorities have a look at Pro Koeln.

There was someone from the Jewish Zentralrat not long ago saying, that Germany should not leave the patriotism topic to the far right. I disagree, I simply don't think, we need patriotism in this society.
