Default Is this true?

Found this by accident on wikipedia:

Quote:
In one year's April Fool's joke, a Dutch television news station reported that the government had introduced a new way to detect hidden televisions (in many countries in Europe, one must pay a television licence to fund public broadcasting) by simply driving through the streets with a new detector, and that the only way to keep your television from being detected was to wrap it in aluminium foil.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_foil
Holy crap, Europe sucks so bad. Living there must be what hell is like.

Can anyone confirm this?

Most Americans pay for TV also, its just not provided by the government.
Also there are some government taxes hidden in your cable bill.

Only if you get cable which is a choice.

I can get a TV and some Foil and watch TV without paying a cent.

Default Digital is still Free.....

Yes and all you will need to do is buy a new TV..and thus receive/decode the signal......
free

(I dunno if the old foil routine will still work but it might..definatly be able to use good old "antenna" and "rabbit ears")

Supposedly by 2009 the USA is supposed to go fully digital. Its petty clear that won't be met unless they simply force it.
Most channels now are being broadcast in both analog and digital format so they could simply "flip the switch" but who knows....

Default Tax

We pay tax in Sa on TV, but it is for the Public broadcaster (SABC) and goes for TV and radio. Same in UK, where it goes for radio and tv for BBC. Therefor BBC may not interupt with advertisments, if I am not mistaken.

Default It would appear

It would appear that it is true:

I was a little shocked myself. Even though I worked a few months in England in the 80's, I didn't remember anything about this.

In a choice between paying a TV licence or letting the market sort it out, I'd chose to pay for a TV licence. It costs a huge amount of money to produce TV programs and to guarentee quality local programming, it is necessary to pay to have that option. There are 'market-solutions' TV stations and the quality of what they produce leaves a lot to be desired.

You have to PAY for the privillage of watching TV? everyone does, even you. Your wonderful prescription medicine companyprobavbly kicks in enough bucks so that you can watch your favourite TV programs.
