Default France set for presidential vote

Quote:
France set for presidential vote

French voters are set to go to the polls in a presidential election billed as the most unpredictable in decades.

Voting begins at 0800 (0600 GMT) for 12 hours, with 12 candidates vying to win through to the run-off on 6 May.

The leading candidates are centre-right Nicolas Sarkozy, socialist Segolene Royal, centrist Francois Bayrou and far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.

French citizens living abroad have already been to the polls, in a bid to make sure all votes count.

After one of the most hard-fought campaigns France has seen, dominated as much by personality as policy, more than one-third of voters are said to remain undecided.

Of the main candidates, the right-wing Nicolas Sarkozy has promised a "rupture" with the past and real economic reform.

Socialist Segolene Royal, bidding to be France's first female president, has pledged a fairer society, while the centrist Francois Bayrou said he would bring together left and right in a government of national unity.

The 78-year-old far-right leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, has seen many of his ideas on patriotism and immigration filter into the mainstream campaigns.

He has confidently predicted he will enter the second round run-off again, as he did in the last presidential elections in 2002.

I think Sarkozy will come out in the end as winner..he appeals to both the centrists and the far right.
He also wants to move France closer to the USA and as such may* take a more overt role with his nation power in terms of the War.

I don't think pure centrist or socialist policies are too popular atm in France. The Immigrant issue and effects related to it are pretty high i Europe atm esp. France.

If not for Sarkozy Le Pen would even be a possibility.

Grif---since you're from France, why is it that the electorate seems to be leaning "conservative" this time? I'm pretty surprised. Happy; but surprised.

I'm 43 and always from France. My vote isn't always the same.

But in this case, with this 12 candidates, the best choice in Nicolas Sarkozy.

A think to the Blue Angels pilot.

Relatively speaking anyway, but they also see lots of lazy slobs leeching off of government their entire lives so they need to change their model a little. What a shock, people with lifetime benefits without question become enslaved to the government.

Not saying that's the case in France, but I know they're concerned about the culture, the economy, but also want to maintain their benefits.

France is not going conservative, but went conservative, old Jaques is an conservative President. If Sarkozky wins, it will just be the status quo.

But, my friends in France say this is not over, and the Socialist are making a good late showing.

Default .

the media has made Sarkozy very presidential.

France seems to be split down the middle.

of course, only the truely uninformed people would say that Europe is Socialist. I especially like how the gop-nincompoops applaud European-conservatism, the same gop-nincompoops must be happy with the Democrats.
