Default Sarkozy wins

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6631813.stm

This will usher in a new age for Europe. With Atlanticist executives in the three msot influential nations in the EU, the proposed free trade area will likely go ahead sooner than thought. Sarkozy is good for America as well this is b/c of his beliefs in the merits of the American economic system and the belief that America and France should be close.

The direction of the EU will also needed to be taken into account as the German President and Sarkozy are both very keen to restart the EU constituion much to the dismay of the British it must be said.

This new president is really what France needs.

Haha, yeah. Especially since he's practically 2-steps away from a Fascist! I'm glad they have a pro-American President now though. Unfortunately it won't be too much of a change...Seeing as Prime Minister holds most of the power in France.

Which is clearly why Charles Schumer likes that he won....

As has been pointed out, a conservative in France is a bit like a moderate Democrat here.

Protectionism, anti war

Quote:
He has shown strong protectionist instincts - pouring state funds into saving the ailing French company Alstom. Yet he also promises to make the French less scared of economic success.

He is often described as an Atlanticist, but he too was against the war in Iraq. He is not too keen on the old Franco-German alliance - but upset new EU members by saying those with lower taxes than old Europe should not receive EU subsidies.

Some other details from Ashley's link:

1. Supports having the state help Muslims build mosques.

2. Strong protectionist policies, even as he wants to introduce more competition within the French economy.

Plus there's this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6357899.stm

1. Would eliminate homelessness within two years.

2. Retain state pensions.

3. Raise taxes on pollutants.

4. Simplify (but not eliminate) farm subsidies.
