Thousands of Communists and Neo-Nazis clash in streets of Hamburg

Clashes between neo-Nazi demonstrators and far-left counter-protesters overnight in the northern German port city of Hamburg left 38 police officers injured, police said Sunday.

Security forces were pelted with rocks, bottles and fireworks and responded by turning water canon and pepper spray on the rioting groups who turned out at a march by the far right.

At least two parked cars and a police cruiser were set ablaze.

Police, who deployed 4,400 officers to keep the peace between the two sides, took 63 demonstrators into custody and formally arrested another 17.

Around 3,500 people, mainly from the hard left, turned out to block a procession of about 700 right-wing skinheads, while more than 10,000 people attended a separate, peaceful rally against neo-Nazis in front of city hall.

Police chief Wolfgang Kopitzsch said he was pleased "that so many people demonstrated peacefully for an open and tolerant Hamburg" but said "nothing could justify" the clashes.

Organised marches by neo-Nazis in Germany generally meet with much larger counter-protests but are often accompanied by violence between the far left and far right.





When decent job opportunities begins to dissappear, the political spectrum tends to get more polarized. These types of far-right versus far-left clashes were once more common during the world economic depression of the 1930's.

Why did they send the police? They should just give each side a bunch of guns and grenades, put them in a field and let them sort it out. haha and when the survivors are left, the police can shoot them all in self defence. (*)(*)(*)(*) I wish duels were legal again.

In a sensible world , Mega's suggestions would be adopted . A European Cup format would be great .

haha it would be fricking crazy viewing. I have to admit I would hate to live in a world where that did really happen - I'd love to watch it though. LOL

Japan and South Korea have also had these types of clashes in the past.

Hey, I was just thinking, since Europe has been the most violent place on earth, as a racist, shouldn't you be supportive of diminishing the 'white European populace' as it were?

What are you talking of? Europe has never been the most violent place on earth, even when one includes both world wars. Other cultures just do not make such a big fuss about their past violent conflicts. History books are notoriously euro-centric, we read very little of what happened in the rest of the word, besides for a few ancient civilizations. European wars, although messy at times, have been much more civilised than any other region of the world.

Africa and Latin America have been far more violent in the last 200 years. By far, many more died from conflict in China in the twentieth century than in european conflicts. Two million children die from starvation in India every year.

China has more people than europe, it is normal that more people die there.
But you should condemn the killing of millions of white europeans thanks to Germany.

In these types of clashes, usually it is the skinheads that start the provokation, then the Communists that initiate the first violent physical attack, and next the skinheads that are only too happy to have an excuse to attack back.

On topic: People that share your ideology were largely outnumbered and beaten in the streets of the very country their ideology destroyed.
