Not long ago well-known “gas princess” of Ukraine and a new Ukrainian premier, Y. Tymoshenko made rather strange statement. She has declared Ukraine’s determination to build a pipeline “White Stream” for transporting Turkmen gas through Ukrainian territory to EU. Mrs. Tymoshenko also said that Ukrainian government is going to get funds for pipe laying from some “donor groups”. However, she didn’t define who concretely will allow her country to get so serious technical and financial support. So I think Europe shouldn’t support this project, because contrary to Nabucco its effectiveness is rather questionable.
In my opinion “White Stream” has minimal chance of being realized, because due to our experts Turkmen and Azeri gas production potential is extremely limited now. To all seeming Ukraine simply wants to argue European donors into necessity of this pipeline’s construction in order to gain hummer access to energy recourses of Central Asian region by-passing Russia. But what will Europe get from it? Instead of long-expected reducing our dependence from Russian gas we will have such unreliable gas transporter as Ukraine and strict economic control of our overseas business rivals. Thus, there is no point for EU to agree on “White Stream” realization. |
