Default Voters in Ireland Are Ready To Wreck EU Treaty - How Unfortunate

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...sters-say.html
Quote:
Voters in Ireland could scupper the controversial EU treaty, a poll suggests.

The survey, just days before the referendum, found that the 'No' vote had surged into the lead for the first time.

Of those polled, 35 per cent said they would vote to derail the Lisbon Treaty on Thursday - double the number three weeks ago.

Meanwhile, those planning to vote in favour dropped from 35 per cent to 30 per cent, the Irish Times poll found.

The treaty must be passed unanimously by all 27 member states.

It has been waved through by the other 26 countries, including Britain, despite fears over the loss of national sovereignty.

But Ireland has a legal obligation to put it to the public - and a 'No' vote would kill it off.

Opponents say that the treaty will enable the creation of a permanent EU president, foreign minister and diplomatic service, surrendering almost 50 national vetoes to Brussels.

But in March, MPs in Britain voted against holding a referendum.

Labour and the Liberal Democrats scuppered calls to give voters the chance to decide on the revamped constitution, despite manifesto pledges from both to hold a ballot.
Gordon Brown has repeatedly claimed the 'constitutional concept' had been abandoned and has resisted calls for a vote.

The Prime Minister said the treaty was 'substantially different' to the constitution rejected by France and Holland in 2005. He argued that Britain was different because ministers had negotiated to protect key 'red lines' on crime and justice, human and social rights, foreign policy and taxes.
In other words, they don't want the EU and Brussels invading their lives.

Looks like the Irish are going to save other Europeans from themselves.

Any vote which seeks to scuttle the EU is a good vote indeed.

No wonder we and other didn't get a vote on this, if one of the most pro-EU countries said no to this!

Maybe they'll just re-name the Treaty again and not let any country have a popular vote. It's great living in a democracy!

The problem is not with the EU per se but with the way the treaty has been framed. It has, for example, been couched in the ideology of neo-liberalism and the emphasis on free market capitalism that underpins it. This is what the Irish have objected to. The bloated and unelected and undemocratic European Commission has also played a significant role in the Irish antipathy towards the European project. The Irish had already rejected what is effectively the same treaty as Nice in 2001-2002, as did the French and the Dutch. So as things stand the pro-free market and neo-liberal treaty cannot be ratified unless all member states agree to sign up for it.

In the UK we were promised a referendum which we didn't get but Gordon Brown effectively rubber stamped it anyway as did many other nations of the EU. There has to be a limit to the extent to which our leaders can water down the treaty further so as to appease a cynical public.

They have put the treaty to the Irish people twice now and they have rejected it on both occasions. If the politicians go against the democratic will of the people and attempt to push this treaty through the back door, I predict that there will be serious civil disobedience on our streets in the months to come.

The EU has been very good for Europe, and especially good for Ireland, since its inception.

Still, I can't say I'm all that disheartened by the Irish vote. Having a constitution, even a "light" version, more than 10 pages long is a misunderstanding of the concept.
