Has been raging on these pages since I joined the forum many years ago. There are (brief) periods of ceasefire, but as both communities have sunk deeper into the financial mire - it seems that (to put it in the words of Tennyson) 'all day long the sounds of battle roll'. The USA is a society based upon European historic principles - democracy, the rule of law, arts and literature, language, technology, etc. So I find it difficult to understand these expressions of enmity - emanating principally from the western side of the Atlantic. Were the USA a Central Asian or African republic, I might understand the lack of mutual comprehension and appreciation. Can anyone provide a rationale or explanation of the causal elements in play with regard to this phenomenon?
Divide and conquer. What would happen if we weren't fighting each other? Might we start discussing our shared goals ,and what is preventing us from achieving them? Thread might as well have been called "The War Between Democrats and Republicans"
There is a cultural gap that is bigger than it looks , to the eyes of a European like half of the American posters here look like they have jumped out of some medieval nightmare and at least for me it all those arguments about politicians who have the exact same patrons are nonsense .
War between Europe and the USA, Leo? All I see is the EU -- built around "Euroland" -- getting more powerful and structurally organized, and on the other hand we see the Anglo-American world falling into pieces.
We have tried to avoid calling you rosebifs since the last mad cow outbreak...but the potatoe blight was a long time ago l'ami
I only notice a few petty differences. America believes in Freedom of Speech. Europe believes in freedom from freedom of speech. America believes in the the right to protect hearth and home. Europe believes in the home intruder's right to not be shot, blungeoned or stabbed too many times over the rightful limit. Just little things like that. Otherwise we have much in common.
I think that's the way it looks to the other half of America as well. I mean, I've been living here over a decade and I still don't get it and don't think I ever will. Anyway, I think its stupid, Western Europe and the US are pretty (*)(*)(*)(*) attached.
Anarchy is not the solution to Socialism neither is a Plutocracy. Plus we all know what happens when Europeans get too much freedom of speech.
Oh come now, my ex-GF (a frenchie) called me "rosbif" all ze time! Especially when it was 6N time of year . Of course, one Sunday I made a full roast beef lunch, the jokes stopped on Sunday's from then onwards .
absolutely on the spot , i am IRCing with American friends and the differences between what they call "the liberals" and the "conservatives" are gigantic like they live in different countries and different ages of course we are on the same boat i just wish that we could exchange the best of our cultural elements not the worst like it is today.
Did you ask her why? And did she bond you before sex? Could simply mean you're a bloody (*)(*)(*)(*).
