The US Congress must approve this but i say no way. These are hispanics and their goal in life is to go on welfare and live off the white man.

Wikipedia says per capita GDP in PR is $26,000 versus $48,000 in america. They're not third world, but these are poor people and they have nothing to offer america.

I'm for anything that makes the racist trash uncomfortable or pisses them off outright.

I feel the same way. We must end the brazen racism of affirmative action.

Yeah we could take your approach by accepting a large number of people who're highly likely to end up on welfare most of their lives.

I'm not the racist. I oppose govt mandated racial preferences and want a color-blind society. Guess what that makes you.

The people of Puerto Rico are not Americans and most of them do not even speak English. We should not attempt to absorb so many foreigners in one day. If granted statehood status, its four million residents will overwhelm our social welfare safety net. We are already $16 trillion in debt. We can't afford Puerto Rico, and should grant it independence.

That's the democrat approach. Give stuff to poor people and thus buy their vote. Works well short term - as socialism always does.

That is not what we should be looking at. What do they offer America? What is the unemployment rate there? What is the graduation rate? If we are going to have a country with 15-20% unemployment, and a low education rate, we are only adding to the problems we already have.

Not grant independence - we should push it on them. Do the same with california.

Latin American Herald Tribune - Puerto Rico Jobless Rate at 16.5 ...

    www.laht.com/article.asp?CategoryId=14092&ArticleId=342236

SAN JUAN – The unemployment rate in Puerto Rico stands at 16.5 percent, the highest of all U.S. jurisdictions, and the government is announcing even more ...

In Puerto Rico, as in the United States, a very large number of students drop out
of school. For the states, recent studies suggest that the dropout problem is much greater than usually acknowledged, with perhaps as many as one-third of all students failing to complete high school in the normal four years. The data for Puerto Rico tell a similar story, but in Puerto Rico the problem appears greater because the data indicate that a large number of students leave the public schools system before even entering high school.

Right, high unemployment rate and high dropout rate. It's time for Obama to make it a state. Look at all those new Democratic voters he'd have.

I don't give a flip if they're Hispanics. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume by Hispanics you mean poor people. Being Hispanic has literally nothing to do with your argument - GDP per capita is. Freudian slip or intentional? I don't really care.

The poor have nothing to offer the United States? Last I checked D.C. has a per capita GDP of over $170,000 - does this make D.C. the district/state offering the most to America?

If we got rid of every state that takes more than it gives in Federal dollars we'd have to get rid of most of the south, including all but 4 Republican states.

Well they would be Americans if you incorporated them into the union. That's the whole point of the thread. We shouldn't make them Americans because they're not Americans? Okay...

What do you mean we shouldn't absorb so many foreigners in one day? That's the entire purpose of statehood. Of course, by foreigners you probably meant Hispanics.

There's no difference in effect between getting rid of negative contribution states and not incorporating them. ie: if your argument that we shouldn't let PR in because it would drain welfare is valid then we should get rid of Alaska, Mississippi, West Virginia, Alabama, etc. Setting an arbitrary line of 50 states is stupid.

But presumably neither of you want to do this. Instead you want to have these states in the union, but advocate for Federal welfare reform. Why can't you do this for PR as well as Mississippi?

Check out Article IV. Congress has the responsibility for entering states into the union, not the executive.

Last I checked half of Congress (more than half if you count by the proportion of each house held) is held by the Republicans, not the Democrats - let alone Obama.

There are already plans for getting oil and building a pipeline in Puerto Rico. Statehood would make that easier I would think.

If we let PR in, it will be by far the poorest state in america. Wikipedia says the poorest now is MS with a median household income of 36k. PR is 18k. That should settle it. We don't need more welfare bums in america.

Constitution also says all legislative power is vested in congress but that hasn't stopped obozo from making up laws by executive order. Obozo does what he wants and the press refuses to challenge him. Their motto is "we will never criticize a black president.
