It looks like Savanah might fall. "Posted August 19, 2017 09:00 pm - Updated August 20, 2017 10:00 am By Spencer Lawton" "Spencer Lawton: Confederate monuments glorify slavery; take them down The monuments should come down. My great-great grandfather was a brigadier general in the Confederate army who was wounded at Antietam and served as quartermaster general of the Confederacy. I am a sixth-generation Savannahian, and proud of my Southern heritage. But this is about monuments, and the year is 2017. A public monument does two things: it glorifies the thing it memorializes, and it says that the public in whose square it appears endorses that glorification. While the Civil War may have been nobly fought, it was by no means nobly inspired. Those who insist it was all about the sacred principle of states’ rights must deal with the fact that, in his famous “Cornerstone Speech,” delivered in Savannah weeks before the war broke out, Alexander Stephens of Georgia, vice-president of the Confederacy, was explicit: “Our new government is founded upon exactly [these] ideas; its foundations are laid, its corner-stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.” To be sure, states’ rights is a bedrock principle of our form of constitutional federalism. But when was the last time anyone erected a monument to the Interstate Commerce Clause? Constitutional legalisms don’t stir passions; questions of human rights do. There is no getting around it: the Civil War was fought because the states’ right to institutionalize and preserve slavery was threatened. It was a tainted cause." http://savannahnow.com/column/opini...rate-monuments-glorify-slavery-take-them-down
Yep.....both the Jewish slave traders and the black cousins who sold 'their people' into slavery.....
Built upon a lie, sustained by ignorance: It's easy to understand why neo-nazis, ku klux klan, and other white supremacists regard these statues as powerful symbols of their beliefs. They are.
This has nothing to do with 'Confederate statues'.......it's about destroying White Western Civilization........and the White race. As President Trump said 'where will it end'. The calls for the eradication of Washington and Jefferson statues/memorials has ramped up this week. Kings College in London has taken down statues and busts of White men.....including founders of the school......and replaced them with insignificant busts of minorities. It is about hatred of the White race.......the Confederate statues were just the lowest hanging fruit to start the genocide.....
Neo-nazis are not the Daughters of the Confederacy with shaved, tattooed heads. They couldn't care less about some long-dead dudes that fought against the United States. Racism is their bailiwick. The monuments to white supremacy are repugnant to American values.
You have already stated that........what is your position on Washington, Jefferson, Sam Houston and all the other statues dedicated to historic dead White men........should they all be taken down as your fellow travelers are advocating for?
Your fellow travelers may be in a tizzy over statues. I have no interest in Mr Houston, and regard public monuments in honour of individuals who founded the United States, and never fought against it, to be entirely appropriate.
But....but.....Washington and Jefferson were both slave owners and White Supremacists. So you support racists and White Supremacists? What about the White horse named Traveler that opens every USC home football game......he holds the same name as Robert E. Lee's horse......shouldn't racist horses from 150 years ago be banned?
I thought I made myself clear. Whether you support racists or your allegedly racist horses is of no concern to me. I oppose monuments on public land in the United States to any individuals who waged war against the United States.
I'm glad every right winger in this thread agrees that Trump has one of the worst approval ratings in the history of this country according to the very same poll. I know your group is typically slow when it comes to numbers and science, but I'm glad you finally all came around.
So you support slave owners, racists and White Supremacists as long as they never tried to protect their homeland from invasion.......got it
If you support slave owners, racists and White Supremacists who waged war against the United States, that is entirely your business. As I unambiguously stated, I oppose monuments on public land in the United States to any individuals who waged war against the United States.
How could the official US military forces invade its own homeland? It was putting down an armed insurrection by group of despicable traitors who were trying to steal a large part of it from their fellow white American citizens. The Confederates were just a gang of armed robbers.
Thomas Jefferson would disagree with you and would clearly have sided with the Southern cause: "Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed-That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish, and to institute new government..... " You do know that the Great Seal of the Confederacy contains the image of George Washington on horseback......another great man who took action against a despotic government on behalf of his people and his homeland.........
There may have been a few minor protest during Obama but nothing like the violence we have seen from the left currently. For the most part republicans accepted it and only worked toward the next elections. Are the democrats doing that now or are all the violent protests only shooting themselves in the foot? Don't forget the Berkley riots, I am not really including the Charlettsville riots because it was both sides at fault.
Really? There were major protests and as we have seen white supremacists are on the rise and radical right wing terrorism is the second largest in fatalities in the US behind Islamic terrorism.
A statue of Sen. Robert Byrd — a Democrat and former leader of the KKK — is on display in a rotunda inside the West Virginia State Capitol.
Heck, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington started the Revolutionary War so that they could keep their slaves. So yeah, they would have been Confederates to the end.
Stop judging then by the prism of today, that is folly. It was about states wanting to leaving the Union and Lincoln saying no you must stay, you didn't think it was about ending slavery did you. Lincoln wanted them back in WITH their slavery and had they dropped their weapons slavery would have continued to be part of the United States just as it had for almost 100 years Not they didn't they tried to leave just as some in California want to do now. That has to be the height of ignorance about the history to compare them to of all people McVeigh. The NORTH invaded the South to start the war, not the other way around. The South just wanted to be left alone. You really don't understand how different the relations between States and the Federal government was back then. Don't they teach that in school anymore? So are you calling the people in California who want to succeed traitors too?
There was no move by the King to abolish slavery in the colonies, they and the Spanish and the Dutch and the French et al needed the slave labor brought to the Americas just as much as the northern states did. They just didn't want large populations of African Negroes in Europe.
There were very few Africans imported after 1808. At the time of the Civil War almost every slave here had been born in America. The Jews were very big in the South American slave trade.
England had outlawed slavery within England and the slavers saw the writing on the wall. So the Southerners like Washington and Jefferson cooked up the Revolutionary War before England could end slavery in America.
