    Hey, ferigners !
How do you feel about :flagus: Halloween?
Some may claim it is from this or that ancient holiday.
Moi says it's just :flagus: prompted by no nation's culture.
I always liked this :flagus: interpretation too.

    Thoughts.
    Domestic or ferign.

There was a Babylon 5 episode that had an alien holiday of the spirit and material world intersection and those on the alien side had quite a holiday. Anyone remember it?
As close to :flagus: Halloween as Dia de muertos.

God Bless America and keep our Halloween and Santa Claus sacred
for which we have a Thanksgiving, another glutinous holiday.

Isn't it 'all hallow's eve', an ancient pagan thingy?

Halloween is the evening before the Christian holy days of All Hallows' Day (also known as All Saints' or Hallowmas) on 1 November and All Souls' Day on 2 November, thus giving the holiday on 31 October the full name of All Hallows' Eve (meaning the evening before All Hallows' Day).

    a catholic holy day

Some say it was an ancient Roman Holiday the Christians applied to their purposes.

    http://romae.org/blog/2008/10/22/the-roman-origins-of-halloween/

    Roman. Celt. Older than ancient
Yet :flagus: gives a different spin on Halloween making it
second only to Christmas as the spendingest Holiday in :flagus:

Similar to Santa Claus and Thanksgiving
Halloween is a uniquely :flagus: holiday.

    Any observations from ferigners?
    Domestic observations good too.

We used to have "mischief night" on October 30 every year when I was growing up in NY. It involved mild, friendly vandalism. No permanent damage.

    We were thugs.

Thanks for that. I should have been clearer. It's 'all hallow's eve' (or all hallows day) which I understood to be pre-Christian.

Ferigner here. We don't do much Halloween here. There is merchandise about, but it's strictly for kids. And of course some do try it on, trick or treating, but we and many others Grinch them. No door answering on the night, between the hours of 5pm and midnight :p

No, samhain is the ancient Holliday. It was the celebration of the end of harvest. A hallow is a saint. November first is all saints day.

When I was living in the city, I used to love Halloween & dress up as Bacchus complete with 2 wine filled wineskins that way you didn't have to wait for the bartender & didn't get thirsty while walking from bar to bar.
Also, since I am a blacksmith, I would make full sized skeletons, steel skulls, steel pumpkins painted pumpkin colored, torch holders all of which the kids loved; especially the full sized steel skeletons.

    It ain't Halloween.
    It is something else.
Like a version of Santa Claus that goes around and whips bad children.

No one does Halloween like :flagus:
    Thanksgiving and Santa Claus too.

The night before All Saint's Day (All Hallows Eve, abbreviated to Halloween) is celebrated throughout the Christian world on October 31.

    Yes DEAR :blowkiss: <sigh>
    And Mexicans have theirs too.

But, America has a unique Holiday that is not recognized as a day off work or school.
And no claim that it represents them or those, Romans, Celts, Christians just does not match
:flagus: Trick or Treat and a time of enjoying ghosts, witches and such forbidden concepts to good Christians.
Yet America celebrates it with spending second only to Christmas, a gov't & school holiday.

    :flagus: Halloween is :flagus:
Some neighbors, Conservative Jewish deny their children Santa Claus but Halloween is okay.
Go figure. I can't. We did discuss it at one time.

And I would sure like to know what then feigners on Board observe. Envious?
I communicate with some bourgeois Russians in Moscow. Over the years they shared that office parties and children trick or treat activities might occur within a building. But, not on the streets. And those efforts have been abandoned.

Maybe I should go as a :flagcanada:

Across an immense, unguarded, ethereal border, Canadians, cool and unsympathetic,
regard our America with envious eyes and slowly and surely draw their plans against us.

And Moi denies it. Yes I did look at the link but none really matches :flagus: Halloween.
And your link fails to include ancient Rome links. See above.
Similar to Santa Claus, one may come close - but no cigar
for the success and interpretation :flagus: gives to Halloween. And Santa Claus too.
    Creating the spendingest Holidays.
And :flagus: did it, Halloween, without a gov't holiday.
    "We" just did it!

BTW does anyone remember the Babylon 5 episode that was sort of
Day of the Dead in a part of the space station?

    Moi :oldman:

God Bless Santa Claus and Halloween too

In Ireland, which is considered to be where Halloween began, the day is still celebrated much like it is in the United States. In rural areas, bonfires are lit as they were centuries ago, and all over the country, children get dressed up in costumes and spend the evening "trick-or-treating" in their neighborhoods.

I always just assumed it was a social response to the inquisition- desensitize people to the scary things associated with demons and witchcraft so we dont get so revved up when someone yells 'witch!' that we let folks get burned at the stake.
