It's a very simple concept. If the population declines consumption declines. When consumption declines so does production. With declining production jobs decline causing further declines in consumption. It's then called a depression. Traditionally, depressions end in wars and a wartime economy is not a capitalistic one.
It can be avoided but only if the uber rich take a smaller piece of the pie and it will continuously decline along with the population.

Japan has 10 times our population density. A falling population is not a problem as long as the country stays homogenous and doesn't decide to import Arabs, Africans, and Mexicans like other countries in the world have. The Japanese will keep their country and culture.
