Ever been to Vietnam? 95 million people crammed into the space of one Australian state. They haven't lost a single person to COVID, despite that crazy density, and despite an extensive land border with China.

Keep going. These 'but .. but' dreamings are fun :)

The Other, not classified elsewhere almost doubled. I'm guessing some of that may be backlog, but would also include every other cause of death - suicides, car wreck, murder, and all the "weird" (obscure) little diseases.

New York City's "Other" category increase almost one thousand percent....so maybe those are mostly just "undetermined" so far. Not sure.

Vietnam. 308 people per square kilometre. Not a single COVID death.

You guys are a riot, honestly :p

    Each country is different:

    https://theconversation.com/vietnam-has-reported-no-coronavirus-deaths-how-136646

Vietnam started early with testing and shutdowns.

    Australia did not.

    Different contexts.

Hopefully! Seriously, I wouldn't mind 12 months. Be a nice way to see out the last days of our kids' childhood .. such of it as is left (not much, given they're 18 and over. They like it too, which is not what we - or they - expected. A break from the grind of commuting to school, but not boring enough to take exception.

Why even try? Every new 'angle' you think you've found makes you look more desperate (to make it seem okay where you are). There's nothing wrong with admitting that you guys got it wrong. Every country fails in some way eventually. This is simply the West's turn to fail. It's been coming for decades, we just didn't know what form it would take.

I was clear China and the US messed up.as did Trump, but Australia did not act early. Vietnam did. Case closed. You seem to be looking for credit Australia does not deserve. Now, that's desperate.

Your healthcare system is cool though.

Are you paying any attention to what is happening to your country outside your own four walls? You're country is likely to run out of free money by December. China would love to step in a "save" you with a bailout.

If you're not careful, China is about to own you. Fortunately, you have Scott Morrison who is a smart leader, as long as y'all don't stay home too long.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...pt-strong-arm-australia-should-disturb-world/

"The more China’s economy grows, the more economic power its government can wield. It’s clear that Beijing is increasingly emboldened to use that power to force obedience to its dictates. Those dictates are not, and will not, be friendly to Western freedoms and democracy."

The virus doesn't care - and that's where the buck stops, unfortunately.

The virus doesn't care what your language is, or your culture, or your geography, or your nation, or your national debt, or your unemployment rates, or your population density. It has one setting for all humanity. It doesn't negotiate.

We're working, and not receiving any kind of benefits. Also, we're self-reliant so our income is stockpiling. Along with that we're stockpiling land, in case there's no further income. Our kids, and their kids, will always have the means of survival. That's what personal responsibility is .. not sitting around hoping the Govt fixes things and wondering how you'll feed yourself if the supermarkets close.

China is being progressively locked out. No one is fearful of the Northern Peril, now.

Demography, population density, timing/level of response, weather conditions, and types of medical treatments all are determinants of the spread of disease among other factors as Epdemiology tells us and Virology highlights. Two different countries can have high or low Covid-19 death rates or total infection rates based upon alternate specific factors.
This is well understood in medicine and public health but what is still poorly understood is how long Covid-19 will be so widespread and which countries will do the best in advance.

What we do know is Australia approached Covid-19 within significant different timelines and manners.

Many countries fear China. In fact they have the second largest GDP, are the global leader in manufacturing and a leader in weapons exports.

Failure of 1st world western cultures will likely result in a Communist China takeover as the new world power. That's the form many of us have seen coming, the first opportunity China had.

Scott Morrison is planning to remove all social distancing restrictions in Australia by July. Isn't that the middle of your cold/flu season?

Australians filed almost 600,000 claims for unemployment in April. You don't seem to understand what could happen next. But, I happy you're safe from the incurable virus because you 'got it right'. ;)

On the contrary, I was one of those who was extremely disappointed that we didn't go harder or earlier. We've lost nearly a hundred people and disrupted industry for months, just because we were too soft. Too worried about upsetting people with a couple of weeks of compulsory quarantine.

But yes, our healthcare system is the bomb. Can't argue with that.

Time for all nations to return to self-reliance. Close your borders, revive your manufacturing, learn to live with less. It's well overdue.

Download he file to excel then and look at it. I'm sure there are holes in the CDC data. It takes them 2-3 years to put all the square pegs in the square holes and match up the rounds. I made that point earlier....the data won't be complete for a couple of years. That's when you provided the lovely link...to the data "in progress". Thanks again for the link. :)

    1) Someone will take over from America, yes. Most likely it will be China, India, or a conglomerate of Eastern nations.

    2) Good thing we don't have too much COVID here!

    3) Mostly they were employed in tourism/hospitality, and the arts. I couldn't possibly care less. They made their beds when they chose to work in notoriously unstable fields. Even then, many are getting more $ per week in benefits than they've ever made before, or likely would have. What happens next? People start wising up and working towards a future friendly source of income. We're some of the most privileged and well protected people on the planet .. so failing that simple task will be a choice. FTR, I'm indulging a little more disdain here because I personally offered several people (who lost jobs in the arts) free independent housing, right back at the start of all this. Every one of them turned it down. They preferred to wait for enough Govt $ to remain in their preferred overpriced hipster neighbourhoods. That's ****ing disgusting, in anyone's books. There are families struggling on single incomes in the boonies, who don't qualify for help because Dad still has a minimum wage job. So yeah, I'll pass on the sympathy.
