And so typical of government and government funding. For decades the wasted money being spent on "pre-k" education is never addressed just the typical "well we need to spend MORE then". The government's own extensive investigations show that there is no measurable difference in educational achievement between children who attend Head Start and those who do not by the time the reach the 3rd grade.

And now the Biden administration and Dems in Congress want to waste even more and to expand the program.

"“It is very much built around the Head Start model. We need to make sure that the Head Start model is sewn into the fabric of this new system,” Tommy Sheridan, deputy director of the National Head Start Association, told Politico."

Of course it is also a government employment plan also employing over 250,000 people. There are 1,000,000 children enrolled. That's one person for every 4 children basically in day care. Go to a local simple daycare center and count and see if they have one adult for every 4 children. All these people with advanced degrees demanding high salaries when they get no better outcome than having a babysitter watch the children.

    And the OP article notes

"The Department of Health and Human Services, which administers Head Start, revealed in December 2012 that the nearly $8 billion Head Start program has little to no impact on the cognitive, social-emotional, or health outcomes of participants, or the parenting skills of their parents.

Alarmingly, participation in Head Start actually had some negative effects on enrolled children. Federal researchers reported worse peer relations and lower teacher-assessed math ability for Head Start children....."

And of course how do these federal employees protect their jobs?

"In 2010, the Government Accountability Office found several Head Start centers around the country actively counseling families to underreport their incomes in order to appear eligible for services. Head Start employees even assured the undercover families that no one would check to see if their information was correct, doctored forms to hide income, and told applicants to misrepresent their eligibility."

Which of course is typical throughout our welfare system.

    As the article concludes

"Since 1965, Head Start has been a sinkhole for taxpayer dollars and an ineffective education program for children. And yet, proponents—hand in glove with Congress—want to model hundreds of billions of dollars in the $3.5 trillion tax-and-spending package on it.

It’s yet one more indication that President Joe Biden’s plan doesn’t “Build Back Better.” It’s building back bureaucracy."

This is just ONE example of this bloated government budget that is totally out of control. Just watch how the "you just hate the little children" comments will come out. How about this we cut that budget in half and make it what it actually is, simple daycare. We can hire babysitters and even require mothers or fathers who are on welfare and not working or working part time but have their children enrolled to also work there to help cover the cost.

Yes, all the studies show these pre-school programs give kids a boost...up to a point, but usually by the 5th or 6th Grade it's like they never went to pre-school.

We keep on hearing Democrats ask for universal pre-school as if it is a good idea. It isn't. It really has serves no positive purpose with the exception of providing babysitting for free. There are better uses of taxpayer money. And is it a wise thing to channel children into school settings at a younger age? I don't think so. I have had several friends and neighbors who were pre-school teachers who advised that it is best to raise your children yourself and only put them in school at the last possible instance, especially for boys. With our youngest son, we kept him at home for an additional year and it made a huge difference throughout his academic life. He was bigger and less likely to be bullied. He was able to sit and be more attentive. He became a class leader instead of being lost in the shuffle. He excelled at athletics. It was the smartest child rearing decisions we ever made.

Pre-school is simply providing a place to store children in a manner that is less harmful than full neglect. If you are looking to warehouse your children, you shouldn't have them.

What should parents do when they have to work but cannot afford daycare?

Give them up for adoption when the foster system is already overwhelmed?

I think we do need some type of child care for parents like many other nations offer. Not all parents have the means to keep their child at home when both parents work or in single parent households.

If all kids went it might allow the schools to teach more earlier. They can only go as fast as slowest student. Plus it’s a huge benefit to parents.

Give the budget to the parents and guardians of children and let them use the money to negotiate for the day care of their children - same approach for the school budget would represent real progress.

We had split shifts at work so we didn't have to warehouse our children. Has there been a dialogue in our society that has addressed the need to have some way to support your children before you choose to have them?

Am I to take it that you agree that pre-school is about daycare and not about education?

Studies by educrats tend to support educrat's agendas. I cannot imagine that is a huge surprise to anyone. However, children, especially boys, who start school when they are older have better long term outcomes:

    https://www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...e-for-school-a-tough-call-for-parents/2017/08

It seems wise to invest a small amount of money in supporting parents trying to raise their children without warehousing them, knowing that this method produces the best long term results, as opposed to spending huge sums for universal daycare which produces little if any long term advantage. The investment in supporting parents to nurture their children longer could be in hte form of tax abatements, tax credits, or grants. Better results for less money makes a lot of sense to me.

People are irresponsible and many did not have a child on purpose. With tightening abortion laws this issue may just compound. Some families do not have the ability that yours did.

I think it was intended to be about education but looking at the numbers it has failed and has become an expensive daycare.

By the third grade no measurable difference in educational attainment, no evidence of better parenting at the home, NOTHING. They could hire minimum wage baby sitters and get the same results. It's a federal higher program for this glut of teachers we graduate every year as we mass produce them instead of making sure the teachers we do have can actually teach the children.

Then they can work at a government daycare and take their children with them.

It's a COSTLY benefit. Establish daycare centers and hire care takers and if a person is not working then require they work their with their children a couple of days a week the others they can be looking for a job. Stop paying for people with masters degrees to pretend they are actually helping the children with their future education.

The foster system is overwhelmed because it costs on average around $40000 (mostly legal fees) to adopt. There is no where near as much regulation in the foster system as there is in adoption, and while adoption offers little to none financial aid for the adopters, fosterers are almost entirely funded by the govt. If we put some money into supporting adoption (and equalized regulation to a similar level as it is in fostering to further lower cost of legal fees), we would reduce the need for fostering by allowing people to more easily adopt.

End Head Start and the high priced babysitters and educational programs and administrators, as I noted 1 employee for every 4 children, and create a system of basic childcare centers. If you are collecting government subsistence and not working full time and have children then at least a couple of days a week you work there and you get to bring you kids so no excuse. The other days you can leave them there to look for work and then accept a job. I bet we could cut it to a third the cost.

But as they say once a program is in place and especially if it has children attached just try to get rid of it. At the least let's not expand it.
