I think it is YOU who has a gross misunderstanding of Jesus. Jesus gave his life on the cross for ALL humans and sinners, not only for the ones who repent or who are obedient to his word. You are just making excuses for the church to hate.

The church would actually have a great opportunity. According to the bible, they should be welcoming to the lowest of the low of society, i.e. the sick, poor, outcasts, downtrodden, disabled etc. People like LGBQT should be the prime clientele for the church. Yet, the church paints them as deviants who go against the will of god. It's the church's loss, they alienate more and more people and get more and more marginalized.

It figures, though, that they chose Trump as their flag bearer. A serial adulterer, billionaire, who ripped off his university's students and his "charities", and who is the epitome of a narcissist. Do you think he is a role model that Christians should emulate? Would he as the flag bearer make it more likely for people to join the church? Think hard about that, and think about what the RW evangelicals these days portray as the face of Christianity in this country. And then they wonder that some people have a problem with them.

And, btw, I've been a catholic and church goer for most of my life until I was 30. I still go sometimes, I like the spirit of the bible, i.e. do to others as you would like them to do to you. Love thy neighbor etc... Unfortunately, these teaching s have been perverted by politics, as we see in this thread.

 

Your premise is false. Jesus explicitly stated your premise was false.

“No man hath any greater love than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are my friends IF you do what I have commanded you to.”

So what did he just say? He said if you do what I have commanded you to then you’re my friend and if you’re my friend then I died for you.

But that says something else as well. It also says if you do NOT do what I have commanded you to then you are NOT my friend and if you are not my friend then I did NOT die for you.

 

Interesting that you so casually condemn Donald Trump while glibly forgiving those who are utterly unrepentant about practicing sexual immorality.

 

While the Pope had people killed for being of the wrong religion or to conquer lands for Christ.
