The problem is, as Lewis Black so eloquently put it, the Democratic party is the party of no ideas. The Republican party is the party of bad ideas. What happens in Congress is, a Republican stands up and says "I have a really bad idea" and the Democrats stand up and say "and I can make it (*)(*)(*)(*)tier".

On-topic....I figure (and I think the RNC figures) 2014 will be the last time they can play the cards the GOP has been playing since Nixon and Reagan's "Southern Strategy".

It's a Congressional mid-term, not a national election and the Repubs have gerrymandered themselves some pretty safe districts where pandering to the OAWM vote will still work.

But 2016 will be different. Presidential election. That's why they're grooming Marco Rubio for 2016 and making him the face of immigration reform. Youth and the ability to atleast TRY to convince Latino voters that the GOP isn't full of Pat Buchanans and Sheriff Joe Arpaios.

The problem for the young is that they are going to be the livestock sustaining all of those old white people for the next thirty years until the last of them dies. No change in the current structure of Social Security and Medicare is necessary for this to happen. It's all going to happen automatically. How do you like them apples? :)

All that is necessary to undermine and paralyze any polity is for about one third of the populace to dissent if they are prepared to force a polity to come to a complete halt. That will require massive civil disobedience.

The Rube may well end up opposing the immigration bill that he helped write if the TPs can intimidate him sufficiently. (Marco Rubio is against his own immigration bill.) That would kill the GOP's entire Latino strategy, because they seem to think that comprehensive immigration reform is the only issue for Latinos.

Demographics - the increasing ethnic and racial diversity of the US along with the more liberal disposition of younger, better educated Americans in general, clearly favours the Democratic Party, especially in national elections - in both the electoral and popular vote.

Republicans will continue to win in their gerrymandered congressional districts, and especially rural ones.

The structure of the Senate also bloats GOP representation. Overall, more populous states will elect Democrats, and sparsely-settled ones Republicans: In 2012, for example, a Democratic Senator from California got elected with 7,748,994 votes, and a Republican one from Wyoming was elected with 184,531; both are U.S. Senators, and count equally in determining majoritarian control.

The fact that more Americans voted Democratic in 2012 for the Presidency, the Senate and the House of Representatives did not prevent Republicans from continuing to run the House, and it is quite possible that the GOP could actually seize control of the Senate with a puny percentage of the overall vote of Americans if they can win in enough relatively uninhabited states.

I think our system of democracy and electing officials is really showing its limits. When you look to the porportional systems that countries use, they get a lot more done.

Being one of them old white people myself, I like it just fine.

But you only gave me 30 years.

That only gets me to 96.

My plan is to live to 110 and then be shot by a jealous husband.

It seems strange to me that the Republican party should be expected to bend over backwards for Latinos. The most first generation illegal immigrants should get is residency without fear of being arrested or deported. A fence should be built to stop illegal immigration. Does this make me anti-immigrant. No. We need to allow more immigration. But we should not respond to an illegal act by giving those who commit such an act benefits. Especially if this is done solely to appease a group who by and large supports benefits such as full citizenship for illegals, based on the color of the immigrants skin.

Swan song for the USA. The "angry white guys" are the only ones actually showing up to work regularly. Yes, they are stupid. They should be training for the collapse as opposed to funding lardasses to set world records of obesity.

Their bitterness derives from their being alienated from the real America.

Where is this "real" America? I'm not sure where you're from, but a large part of this country is still white, by a vast majority. Most of the non-white are crawling all over each other in (*)(*)(*)(*)ty section 8 housing in the liberal cities on the coasts.

There is no real America. There are many versions of America. Broadly they fall within a stark dichotomy. There is Old America of education, competence and affluence. And there is New Amerika which is so poorly educated, unskilled and poor that it has no future other than to live off of the wealth accumulated by Old America. When that wealth runs out New Amerika will be screwed.

Are you familiar with the World Economic Forum's Competitive and Governance Indexes? The US rankings are declining. But political corruption is increasing. The New Amerika is becoming like the Old Mexico of Patron and Peon.

You can deny it, but the real America is the one where Barack Obama has been twice elected President by the People in a democratic process.

Some are so alienated from the nation that they dwell in their own alternative, delusional version of it where they are led by fantasy - that the President cannot be legitimate, that Willard Mitt Romney is the People's choice by a landslide. As ludicrous as that sounds, a few are so estranged from their fellow Americans, they actually believe nonsense like that. Really.

2014 - Angry White Guys' Swan Song?

    Let's see.

Angry? Yup, that's me. The problem with the original post is the assumption that I'm automatically angry at the same things they are. This isn't so. While neither party is perfect, the GOP has been trying to sell me a sh*t sandwich for lunch for years and then accusing me of everything in the book when I tell them to go pound sand. They not only lie, they are amazingly clumsy about it - to the point that a person in their late 60s on a limited income and with no staff can spend a very short time researching the various subjects and find out just how full of it the repubs are.

White? I guess so. Actually, I'm more high-blood-pressure pink. Still I fit the demographic the repubs try to sell their used cars to. It hasn't worked. I refuse to feel threatened by others just because some BS artist tells me I should be.

Guy. Yup. No problem there. I'm just not falling for their bogus (other priorities) macho. I don't need to stockpile guns or talk about "legitimate rape" and "feminazis" to be male. I'm not terrified by the thought of same sex marriage because I've always considered another couple's marriage to be their business and none of my own. Also, I don't need to scream (and fixate) on homosexuals to the extent that I have no other role in life. Frankly, I've always suspected those types of homophobes to be possibly, deep down inside, a little light in the loafers.

Swan Song? I suppose so. No one is immortal, a statement which (given the history of the GOP over the last two generations or so) cannot be said for stupidity.
