    this is a good thing, why do we want overpopulation? then you democrats will cry when we need to take down trees to make homes, produce more energy and more food. Climate change? more cars, more consumption, more energy requirements...

    So why do you want more people? the world is overpopulated by humans, it's not a bad thing to see population growth taper down. There were 2 billion people in 1930s, now 7.7 billion! We can't sustain these amount of people, good luck with climate change, poverty, inequality as population continues to sky rocket.

    Look at that hockey stick. Surely, this exponential growth in population can not have any effect on the health of the planet :).

    I'd say, for the planet and future generations, it's a great thing that population growth is moving from the exponential phase to the plateau phase. It will, however, make it more difficult to achieve high economic growth.

    Now to the next question: If exponential population growth is unsustainable, how can exponential economic growth be sustainable?.

    This is the correct question we need to be addressing. It should not be a partisan question, but it invariably does (and I predict it will be in this thread) turn into one when one begins to question the status quo of modern day capitalism.
