Yeah, let's stifle innovation by suing anyone who builds a better mousetrap. All they have to do is label it a "toy" instead of a medical device.

Hey, you know that those big R&D companies didn't invent the arm, right? And why don't you prove that these students used their R&D, as opposed to just reverse engineering nature as the R&D companies did.

No, there is also some electricity involved, and the renting of a 3d printer. That's what brings the price up so high, because the plastic alone wouldn't be anywhere near $350.

could that young boy have gone out and bought that arm for $350? can you go out and buy that arm for $350? of course not, because no one can sell you that arm for $350. you may be able to go out, find a group of generous engineers, a couple of kindly equipment owners and have that arm made for $350, but that is an entirely different matter. in order to simply sell that arm, a piece of medical equipment, requires licenses 9remember that red tape you thought was irrelevant?) that would break the bank immediately, so you cannot buy that arm for $350 and your entire argument becomes disingenuous at best.

you seem to have this naive notion that if we all just get along we can accomplish anything, but that is a pipe-dream. sometimes the stars align, the right people get together at the right time and something wonderful occurs. the rest of the time we stumble along, trying to improve the state of business as usual as best we can and just hoping to get things right. appreciate the miracles, but don't expect them.

Like I said, label it a toy or a novelty, and you avoid that red tape. Much like herbal remedies are labeled "supplements".

Oh, I DO appreciate the miracles. But people like you and the OP want to look that gift horse in the mouth. So instead of taking the reasonable position of "oh that's wonderful news", you guys lament lost corporate profits and complain about stolen R&D (even though you've never shown that it was). Because defending capitalism takes priority over defending children. Capitalism is fine, but it's not a god to sacrifice children to.

It's not fraud. Fraud is when you hype up a product with false claims of its benefits, not when you don't state all the benefits of it. IOW, underselling a product is not fraud. It's just a simple matter of not making any medical claims. Do you think it's fraud when certain herbal remedies are labeled "supplements"? And who is being defrauded?

I think you're in the wrong thread. This thread is about an inexpensive prosthetic arm. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Benghazi.

Captain Ahab had a prosthetic device.
Each prosthetic limb is custom made. They aren't taken off a rack and put
on the person. Have you any idea what a custom car costs? Do you know
what goes into building a custom car? The same goes for custom clothing,
a custom hat or custom anything.
    there is, see above.
Supply and demand. The more product you have i.e. cars, food, teachers,
the lower the price is going to be. But when you're in the custom business
supply is low and people need to be paid, i.e. employees, land lord, utilities,
stock holders, owners, etc. Funny anecdote, they also have bills to pay.

Dear lord, could you spin any faster?

So, let me get this straight. Corporations who charge appropriately to comply with an over-regulated, over-taxed, over-controlled government requirements are "greedy". While groups who skirt the requirements, and produce cheaper products are "stifled" when asked to participate on an equal playing field.

Let me guess... you support government regulation of medical device corporations?

this garbage may fly with your friends at aa, but here in the real world it's a different matter. misrepresenting your product in any way is fraud. misrepresenting your product in order to avoid paying fees and taxes is defrauding the government. make a practice of it and you won't be laughing for a long, long time. those boys take very seriously their ability to pick the pockets of the citizenry and they'll probably come up with a few more charges to add to your indictment.

unless, of course, you happen to be a congressman. then it's a good way to move up in the ranks. you'll probably even end up as chairman of the ethics committee.

Like I said, you don't have to misrepresent it. Just don't make any claims about it at all.

No one said that, but keep beating up that strawman.

Keep guessing. You can have an argument with yourself over the things you imagine. Or you could just stop putting words in my mouth and deal with what I actually said, but hey, where's the fun in that, right?

While it's entirely possible, probable even that the $350 prosthetic is not equal to the $40,000 one, the day is not that far off where it WILL be. Think about the evolution of computers over the past 25 years or so. Now apply that to 3D-printing. Rather than going to a store to "buy" an iPhone-20, you'll put some raw materials into a box and it will spit one out for you.

What makes you think the medical device industry, the pharmaceutical industry or the insurance industry want free markets??????

There is no evidence to suggest that they do, and a lot to suggest that that is the last thing that they want.

So, I'll kick the question back to you.

How is it an example of the "free market" when a man can fly to Europe, spend a week in a clinic, pay for a hip implant and have the surgery done for LESS MONEY than the company that made the hip will sell it for, when he lives right down the street from the factory that made it?

Let's see how free market conservatives defend the highest medical costs in the world and the monopolistic practices and price rigging that is rampant in the American health care industry!

    This ought to be good!

    Hi ctrl,
    Thanks for replying.

What do you mean by "where do you spend 300 on paper"? The gist of
your post implies that you don't pay for printing supplies. Which also
implies that those who create custom made artificial limbs don't pay for
    their printing supplies.

I wonder what the least expensive 3D printing supplies for artificial limbs
is listed as? Don't forget to add that all artificial limbs are custom made.

the housing is custom made, measurements, probably just an optical scanner... probably looking at around 50 bucks in abs extrude. give or take. it would be nothing for a cad kiddie to pump out custom prosthetics all day. i am positive a quick google search will return a (*)(*)(*)(*)load of actual real world examples as this is not a new idea. i remember a story about a young boy for whom this was a solution 2 years ago, as outgrowing his prosthetics promised to keep his parents in the poorhouse. give it a whirl. id do it but am on phone and lazy

No. The housing isn't/wasn't custom made. They were all the same.

I am familiar with prosthetics which range wildly in function... and typically where they attach' has to be custom made. Where did you read the sun is bright x300?

I'm so sorry to embarrass you with facts. Please forgive me.

At any rate, we're all glad to know that you know that we can finally put this discussion
to rest. Prosthestics aren't cheap no matter what the hard lined left winged extremist
knee jerk reactionary liberals have decided to indoctrinate as fact, which isn't fact.

I'm proud of you for accepting fact over fiction.

you are attempting to be condescending and pious, however you have not demonstrated any facts, nor contradicted anything i have told you. you and you alone introduced the concept of free. you are working with 50 bucks in materials out of a claim of 350... not free. i guess you are arguing pizza should cost 1000 dollars because a pizzza hut oven and conveyor system costs 200k. i am not convinced you understand any of the economic principals or technology involved. if you would like me to explain either, i am happy to. this IS how free market works. and for the record i am so conservative i am a breath away from being an anarchist.
