Diverse states with differing interests would/will not allow themselves to be governed based on population alone, allowing large states to permanently dictate policy to less populous. That's it, the plain, unadorned, irrefutable fact of why the EC exists. The United States would never have existed without it, and will quickly disband if it is removed.

Where you got the absurdity above who knows, who cares? Was it in a union newsletter? Seems likely.

Conservative hates the EC up until it became clear that Trump won. Trump and the Republicans spent the entirety of the general election accusing the EC of working with Hillary to rig the election, and publically calling for it to be abolished, and then whe Trump won, suddenly the EC is the greatest thing ever, espcially sense far right controlled states actively worked to silence and remove any non-Trump supporting delegates.

So instead we have 1% of the populations having as much control over the nation as the other 99%. That's not democracy.

No, it's a fact. The EC comes from smaller states insisting on it, not elites thinking the people are too dumb to vote or whatever other manure you will peddle next. Don't like facts, then fine, make up more ridiculous crap and make yourself look more foolish.

To be fair, Democrats only want to scrap the EC because Trump won it in 2016. They fully supported it until that point. And it was Trumpers, who now praise the EC, who were calling for it to be abolished, because Trump was convinced he couldn't win the EC and so he claimed that if he lost it was because the EC was rigged by Clinton.

I actually misread what you typed and changed my reply.

YOu are right it did come out of small states hating democratic values.

I've been a conservative for a long time and never hated or seen other conservatives hate on the ec. We know why it is there and what its purpose is.

The electoral college is outdated and broken. Look at what it's given us in the last 20 years, George W. Bush and Donald Trump. Two of the worst presidents of all time. The people who live in Wyoming should not count for more votes than everyone else.

The idea that states like Wyoming or the Dakotas would secede is totally ridiculous.

The Republican party has become a minority in the US and yet retains power through what are, in my opinion, broken systems. You want to see what is really going to happen? The majority, who favors moderate and progressive leadership, is going to eventually come to a breaking point. Look at the massive amount of protest against Kavanaugh and Trump. Eventually that will become a social movement. When it does, expect radical change.

communists would LOVE it if their comrades in California and the New England states were the only thing needed to seat their dictators and activist judges.

Donald Trump ran circles around Clinton playing by the rules of the electoral college. She was busy running holding fundraisers in Hollywood and Manhattan because the Clintons care about money first. So she ran up the score in California and New York. Meanwhile, Trump went in and won the Rust Belt. If the election were held using popular vote, Trump would still be smarter than Hillary and still devise a campaign plan to win that too.

It makes all the sense in the world if you understand why we have the electoral college.

Correct. The democrats hate it because they have a majority over republicans. It's never about what it best for the country is it?

They don't. Everyone's vote counts exactly the same.

Majority does win; the majority of the electoral votes. :)

This is to prevent tyranny of the majority in the form of the most populous states running roughshod over the lesser states. Many democrats now complain that rich people have too much power over the poor (e.g. Citizens United). I agree. So why flip flop when it comes to letting population centers like New York, LA and Chicago dictate to the rest of the nation who shall become President?

    Incorrect.
The EC was designed to make sure the states had a say in who becomes the head of state and government.
Please name the 26+ states that do not hold an election to seat their electors.
Interestingly, MORE electors defected from Hillary's list.

Of course it has to do with Hillary. You guys wouldn't care about the Electoral College if Hillary and Gore had won. Those elections were even mentioned in this thread.

And everyone's votes aren't counted equal anyway. The Senate is obvious, but each congressional district has one Representative, and none of them have the same population. Tough titty bubba.

States are free to give out electoral votes in any way they see fit. If they wanted to give them to the winner of the national popular vote they could. If you don't like the rules, and I think you have a legitimate gripe, then change them.

The people do not have a right to vote for President, and never have.
How do yo not know this?
False premise. Everone's vote counts the same because everyone votes in one of 51 state elections.
No one votes in a national election.

    Unsupportable nonsense.
The electoral college doesn't exist until AFTER the election.

Option C: make the Electoral College proportional instead of first past the post. Turn every state “Purple”.

The EC has given us all but one of our elected Presidents.

The popular vote has given us all but 5 of the presidents. The electoral college determined those 5.

People who live in less populous states receive a higher number of electoral votes per capita, this mean that their votes are worth more.

    Stop being illogical.
