Perhaps we should just outlaw driving and have government drivers take us where they think we should go! Yay! More government!

I thought we were moving towards self-driving cars!

I just knew a leftist were coming along and interpret my post that way... No the freedom to be left the hell alone and not have big brother looking over your shoulder at your every damn move in your life.

Don't you think people should be somewhat free to make choices whether they're good or bad or do you think the government should make them for them?

Used to be only convicted drunk drivers were forced to blow in a tube now you want everyone to do it?

I mean you would think, but I've seen those things blow a positive over the dumbest stuff. Can only hope quality ones are paid for by companies...

Coming soon - a car that starts only if the driver and all passengers are vaccinated and have appropriate antibody count in their blood.

I (and many other people I suspect) will just keep buying old cars with less government interference. Congrats lefty nanny-state lunatics, the world is going to be more polluted by old cars and it's all your fault.

Been telling everyone for years bout the evil of Utilitarianism - justification for law on the basis of "Harm reduction" "If it saves one life" - what is best for the collective .. with no regard for the rights of the individual.

Gives Gov't near unlimited power allowing such justifications for law. Hey .. if we just put cameras on people 24/7 .. everywhere - we can solve all crimes .. why not. .. The right to privacy is superceded by the supposed increase to happiness of the collective .. "Harm Reduction"

Vax mandates -- another prime example .. but, this plague has infected not only Blue .. SC of South Dakota just overturned a referendum 58% in favor of pot legalization. .. in an astounding "FU" to the founding principle - constitution -and a constitutional Republic. - every one of those clowns should be dismissed on this basis .. failure to interpret law and the constitution on the basis of the founding principle.

Only down from here -- just sit back and watch as Gov't further increases power and as we descend further into a Fascist /Authoritarian police state.

You make a strong point. Best way to hide something that must be included in a document is fodder- bury it in recitals and BS.
The prime legal document that defines our entire democracy is the Constitution. It contains 4543 words. Not pages- words.
Biden's latest bill contains 10,000. Not words, but pages. You can bet no member of congress has actually read it, let alone understand what all is buried in it, other than their own pork paragraphs.

The next generation of drivers won't know any different. It will be entirely normal for them to have that technology in cars.
Just like phones are a part of their existence.

BTW - how many incandescent light bulbs do you still have?

Government-Marxist overreach is present in almost everything we do these days. Specifically with driving, we saw how it mandated that we wear seat belts, and if found not wearing one you'll receive a $$ fine. Now, we're about to see another mandate of putting alcohol content devices on our steering wheels. What's next in the future, we we be fined and or possibly jailed for driving a gas-operated vehicle when and if we're inundated with electric cars.

Off subject for a moment: When COVID was at its height last summer, a city near where I live called Lawrence, Ma. had issued a $300 fine to anyone walking 'MASKLESS' in downtown Lawrence. Does any of this government overreach be it federal or local look like anything coming from our American rights and or from our Constitution?

Insurance companies were the largest voice in pushing for seat belt and air bag laws.
The gov't only does what the big lobbyists tell them to do.

    ...
“If they get this 10% they are well on their way,” said George Tye, a lobbyist representing an influential coalition of insurance companies that, together with consumer groups, favor air bags and oppose the auto makers’ efforts. “If they do not get California, they will have real trouble coming up with that two-thirds.”

It would not surprise me if insurance has a voice in this as well. But I suspect this is more about drunk drivers killing people, which also affects insurance companies and payouts.

Yet one more reason to not purchase newer vehicles. Thankfully for every one of these types of mandates there's a consumer way to reprogram the vehicle to override this type of stuff. It's getting pretty ridiculous that people have to keep buying aftermarket parts for their vehicles in order to make it act like a normal vehicle due to government overreaching mandates.

I had to reprogram my Chevy to override that stupid "active fuel management" that cuts off half the cylinders whenever the smart truck decides I don't need them. Overriding the computer to make the truck run on all 8 cylinders all the time as it was designed to do has resulted in a MPG reduction of roughly 1-2%...However, doing so has increased the lifespan of my engine significantly by not destroying lifters and valve stem seals. There will be things you can plug into the car to disable this breathalyzer thing getting sold on Amazon in a matter of days after the first of these new vehicles roll out.

Hey government, how about you stay out of my damn car?

I'm sure that the democrat politicians will find a work around so one of their pet groups won't be burdened by the device - and if not, the ACLU will claim "disparate impact," they will sue the Feds, the taxpayers will have to pay several hundred thousand dollars to each of those inconvenienced, and the law will be amended so cars in El Paso won't be required to have the device.

Someone give me a log cabin in the woods 20 miles from the nearest neighbour, and hundreds of books.

Yeah, you're right about it being the insurance companies that have the final say in issuing these auto safety edicts. My bad, but to me it does seem like a familiar government edict or mandate against our individual rights and freedoms. My friend did some two years in prison for having been caught driving many times under the influence. After released he still had to blow into some object on the steering wheel or some other fixture to make sure he wasn't over the alcohol limit before being able to drive. Perhaps its my age and or the fact that I don't drink that makes me skeptical and somewhat disgusted that there are so many laws that seem to be handcuffing our freedoms.

IMO you repeat offender friend should be required to blow into that device for the rest of his driving life.
As for part of the every car mandate, I think that is over reach.

I used to rarely wear a seat belt. And hated the mandate. But after 15 or so years, I feel naked and vulnerable if I forget to put it on.

We need to rid ourselves of insurance companies who push these laws on the gov't to put in place.

All the pages in all the legislation ... even if a Congressman or Senator could read them, there's absolutely no way to know how they fit with other legislation.

People keep bitching about these laws, which are obviously written by lobbyists. Why, then, do they keep re-electing these clowns?

we have the exact government we ask for.
