Recall watching a docu, many years ago, about the Amish, in the US.

To an outsider looking in, their way of life may appear odd to us, boring even.

But, while I am not saying I would wish to take on all of it, there was a real simplicity and sense of community about them, which struck a chord, at least with me.

Unlike many, they also appear to keep a low profile, not hold a desire to engage in every material or deviant act going, and generally seem like a decent people, to me.

    :peace:

sometimes referred to as Amish Mennonites, are a group of traditionalist Christian church fellowships that form a subgroup of the Mennonite churches. The Amish are known for simple living, plain dress, and reluctance to adopt many conveniences of modern technology. The history of the Amish church began with a schism in Switzerland within a group of Swiss and Alsatian Anabaptists in 1693 led by Jakob Ammann.

I find a lot to admire in the Amish. It's a society that seems to actually be stable and successful.

Not sure I was blown away by the tourists going there, to be honest.

That sort of marred it, for me.

Perhaps it is because they know not of greed, and work together...

    Just a thought...

I like the way of the Hutterites in Montana better than the Amish. They stay modern and use technology to their advantage. I agree the simplicity and sense of community is very attractive.

It is a fact and they know this needs to change. Friendly as all get out though. Best neighbors you could ask for.

    Personal experience?

Why does it say they tend to get friction then, is it merely down to them being different?

Best friend was a fly fishing guide in Montana and new some of them. One of my old girlfriends parents own a dude range in Montana and grew up with them. I do not understand what you mean by friction? The Amish do not like outsiders (the English), the hutterites are cool and more social although they still marry within their own group. The only things I know are from second hand.

The Amish are very nice people in general, but they will constantly pester you for rides.

You know why the Amish don't water ski?

    Their horses would drown.

They do, but they'll take rides from people. A lot of them have livestock too, and they pay people to haul it for them.

    Do they?

I could have sworn they are meant to speak some German dialect.
