Police Repel Protesters From Ukraine Government HQ

KIEV, December 9 (RIA Novosti) – Interior Ministry troops in Ukraine’s capital on Monday repelled demonstrators from a position they had taken up outside the Cabinet office in a renewed effort to clear major protest sites.

Thousands of protesters in Kiev have built a tent camp in the central Independence Square and barricaded a number of important state buildings in an attempt to stall the work of the government as part of ongoing rallies to demand snap elections and the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych.

A RIA Novosti correspondent reported that police and Interior Ministry troops had started dismantling barricades blocking access to the government headquarters.

In a separate development, the party of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said riot police had stormed its headquarters.

“There are many Berkut [Ukraine’s riot police unit] operatives, they are breaking down doors,” Marina Soroka said in an interview with Ukraine’s Channel 5 television.

The Kiev police was quick to deny the report, however.

Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) is one of Ukraine’s three major opposition parties leading mass rallies against the government policies that have swept through the former Soviet republic in the past three weeks.

Street protests have been taking place in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities since the government announced on November 21 that it would postpone signing free trade and association agreements with the EU in favor of strengthening ties with Moscow.

    Nothanks.

ok it's not a simple issue at all but building walls/obstructions by creating trading blocs and exclusive economic zones is not the way to go either...

One of Putin's goals is to hold on to the Crimea. It's the Crimean Turks who have been fighting in Syria, that have committed the excesses in Kiev that provoked the police. Here it is from Voltaire.net:

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In Kiev, for more than a week, massive demonstrations are trying to force the government to go back on it’s decision not to sign the association agreement with the European Union.

In fact, Ukraine has been historically divided into two populations: in the West, the pro-European Union supporters, and in the East, the pro-Russians. It is on this division that the ’’orange revolution’’ had bloomed and that the protesters would like to revive.

Yet, the crowd control contingent at these protests is made up of a group of young Crimean Tatars.

They are members of the ’’Azatlyk’’ (freedom) movement led by young Naïl Nabiullin, and campaign for a Greater Turkey

They are backed by Trotskyist parties such as the Russian Left Front of Sergei Udaltsov, as well as the Turkish government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. They’ve just come back from Syria, through Turkey, where they had gone to practice jihad against the Syrian government. They seem to be behind the provocations that have led the Riot Police to commit excesses.

I'll wager it was by American design. The US no doubt fears strong ties between foreign nations that could threaten US hegemony.

No, you wouldn't see the US in Ukraine now. I'm talking about the EU's attitude toward Russia and Eastern Europe leading up to the present.. The EU is very pro-US, such that they're our little b-word and want to make us happy. If we don't want them getting too friendly with Russia, they won't.

Did you read in Voltaire.net who was behind the excesses in Kiev? It was Tatar jihadists who were fighting in Syria. They went through Turkey, (with Erdogan's blessing), in order to provoke the police. They know that when the police respond harshly, that Europe and the world will condemn the government and maybe some fighting will start like in Syria. They have been doing things like that for years in the surrounding countries. The Crimea is one of the places the New Ottomans have their eyes on. Oh but that's right I forgot, the U.S. is to blame.

Anyway the Russian Treaty for the fleet ends in 2017, and Erdogan has offered to resettle the Tatars in the Crimea. They were shipped to Siberia by Stalin. Do you have any idea what the megalomaniac has been doing in that part of the world? As an example, he has said that Cyprus is not a country even though it is recognized by the U.N. and is part of the E.U., and has sent a search ship with two warships, to search for gas in Cypriot waters, even though the rights to those waters were given to the American firm Noble Gas and the Italian firm Eni. This is just one example of hundreds. :disbelief: .
