As I recall the M-14's had a cook-off problem with their design for hot gas feeding into the detachable box magazine. I even watched one cook-off once. It was like a giant flare coming out of the rifle.
Right, as we all know heavy concentrations of lead in ground water near military bases is definitely a PC issue. We all know the Right is pro-lead poisoning. But if forget, everything since Truman made whites serve with "coloreds" is "PC" to you.
Before reading the rest of this thread, I just wanted to mention my own impression that the Japanese 6.5x50 Arisaka was the best overall anti-personnel cartridge. Some kind of Ruger Mini-14 design for this caliber seems like it would make a great carbine or battle rifle. Ok now I'll read the rest of the thread ... .
The USMC had already armed their infantry fire teams with one M-14 each. These are accurate to about 750 yards. As such they are a good long-range supplement to a fire team in the defense. So now I see what you are getting at @APACHERAT -- the M-14's are as good as anything else for this longer range role.
And the left is pro wild fires. Why do liberals like starting wild fires ? In California the left outlawed lead bullets for hunting. The Burial of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Services (USFS) said those liberals in Sacramento are really stupid and you get caught using a PC lead free ammunition on federal land in California they will throw your butt in jail. Copper and lead are non ferrous metals. Ferrous metals like steel will spark when hitting other ferrous metals or any thing that contains iron which includes most rocks and soil (dirt) Non ferrous metals don't spark except in Hollywood. One of President Obama's last executive orders was to outlaw lead bullets for hunting or target practice on all federal lands. One of President Trump's first executive orders was repealing Obama's PC lead bullet ban executive order. Hey,,,guess where lead comes from ? The freaking ground.
The EBR isn't a base M-14. It's composite stocked and failed to the gills. I am actually a big fan of the EBR, but from a logistic standpoint, it make more sense to use an AR based rifle.
Ok so the first question that the Army and the USMC will need to decide is where do they expect to fight next ?? The military brass are always caught with their pants down planning for the last war, not the next one. I think our foray into the desert is over now. We are going to let the rag-heads fight it out among each other without us. So ultra long range will not necessarily be needed that much longer. So will it be jungle? Or cities? Or mountains?
Pray tell, what is the functional difference between a "declaration of war" and an "authorization of use of military force" beyond semantics?
I am getting the distinct impression that you have no idea what you are talking about. Iggy list. Go. Shew.
They have a copper jacket not a steel jacket. How long would a barrel last with steel jacketed bullets going down the barrel ? Armor piercing bullets that all have a black painted tip have a steel core and the green tip M855 bullet has some lead in it's core but has a steel bar in it's core. You may remember when the left tried to outlaw civilians from owning the green tip 5.56 like they did with the selling "Black Talon's" ammunition to civilians.
