The number. Nobody asks for the card. The number verifies identity. Indeed, virtually all requests for SSN identification ask for only the last four digits. Just like a PIN. Four digit PIN's are secure, which is why we use them for bank cards. They are just as secure when used for voting. Furthermore, ballots have to be signed; ATM withdrawals don't.
Ah, but a 4 digit PIN is only secure when used in conjunction with a 16 digit card. SS numbers are stolen all the time.
SSN's are tied to a person, and if needed, a signature. The security level is the same. If someone steals my wallet, they won't guess the correct PIN on my bank card, and if someone steals my ballot, they won't guess the last four of my SSN, much less be able to forge my signature.
The SS card is old technology. I'm not even suggesting we give everyone a new number. If we tie a machine readable card (a cellphone can be the reader), we can issue the card to temporary workers and change the database to remove work authorization. The card becomes useless.
There can be quibbling about the details, but I've said for a long time that federal income taxes are too low, so I support this. We cannot continue indefinitely spending more than we take in.
The Nexus Card is tied to fingerprints and iris scans, both readable by a cellphone. With technology, we can hold every potential employer to account, even those hiring domestic and day labor, for only hiring people entitled to work here. The Nexus Card shows we can apply technology to the problem. IMO, even better solutions are available, but the Nexus Card is proof of concept. We should decide who and how many come here. The most worthy aren't necessarily the people presenting themselves at the USA-Mexico border, or the more than half of illegals who overstayed a visa.
My guess? They think Republicans may get control with an effective system and stop illegals from obtaining work. That might impact political support in the Latino community where families often mix illegals and people born here. What stops Republicans? Fear an effective program could cut off the supply of cheap labor. My reaction to games played by both parties? I have a long history of involvement with both liberals and conservatives, in this country and Canada (born USA, naturalized in Canada, live in both countries), in political action. My political soul isn't for sale.
The right isn't in power. In fact, tax increases can be passed without any GOP votes. So you guys knock yourselves out. Tax all the monies.
It's your desire to tax like the EU does not me and that means the lower income groups paying full tax bills. AOC just argued the same but as point out here "Then there is the matter of what exactly $45,000 — the salary an employee making $22 an hour on a full-time basis would earn — means in each country. Denmark can afford its system because high taxes are paid by all its citizens, not just the wealthy. Not only do Danish fast-food employees making $45,000 hand over around half their earnings to the government, they pay a 25 percent value-added tax on most purchases, as well as a number of other levies. In return, Danes are afforded all kinds of government-provided services. Presumably, Ocasio-Cortez approves of this arrangement. Either way, Americans whose eyes light up at the prospect of making $22 per hour should know that nearly $11 of that goes straight to the state." Take that $15 an hour and have to pay half back to the government and you're back $7.50.
Try again and actually respond to what I posted "Then there is the matter of what exactly $45,000 — the salary an employee making $22 an hour on a full-time basis would earn — means in each country. And any new ID will also be forged. It isn't a fix, it's a bandaid. Any system or document man can create, man can forge or game. But the SS number has to be registered at the SS admin. One can't just generate any old number and have it equate to a real SS number. I remember before people were 18, they easily acquired a fake Drivers License so they were made older. Picture and all. No system will ever ever be 100% secure.
Republicans won't stop illegals from working here. They hire them just as much as any other party or group. They know those workers are needed in our economy. That's why trump, when some of his companies were caught with illegals in employment, only fired them, never deported them. Not him personally, but he never requested them be deported or the hiring managers be fired. It's just as illegal to hire an illegal as it is for an illegal to be here. Of course this is my opinion, giving that the solution to the problem is never addressed. That being the vast majority come here to work and we never go after those who hire them. If we went after employers, that would get to the root of the problem
Illegals have been an issue since WW2. It would indeed. If we don't control who works here, I think we have lost control of who lives here.
You throw numbers around like you know what you're talking about. https://www.oecd.org/social/income-distribution-database.htm Income is distributed more equitably through a combination of government services and the tax system. The VAT they use encourages savings and discourages consumption. income is redistributed by providing high-quality government services.
I throw facts around which you apparently can't refute. I don't care what you claim the purpose of the tax, it IS A TAX and those lower income groups in those places PAY full taxes. So OK let's increase the minimum wage to $15 but fully tax it. What do you say?
I know, from observing the illegal immigrant issue for the last 30 yrs, we won't address the immigration issue. Both parties want them here. But neither wants to work to solve the immigration issues. It is one of those hot point political issues that riles up the sheep come voting time. The people need to realize the 2 parties are playing them on the issue and never work to address the main causes of the problem.
Nah, keep it $7.50/hr and give them all food stamps, free medical, and housing assistance. And pay no taxes. How does that sound? Since that is basically the system now.
Why do teens making minimum wage need all of that? And the others can help foot the bills they produce. How does that sound?
