Adopting the terminology of Henry Kissinger and other planners, Boston Globe Editor Randolph Ryan who was perhaps the harshest critic writes that:

    As Noam Chomsky put it:

So now that the "infectious virus" has been stopped, it is no longer necessary to continue "ripping apart the social and economic fabric of the country...[Meaning,] making the people suffer as much as you can untill the country plunges into chaos, untill at some point you can step in and impose your choice of government on that country, a strategy that was ultimately successful in the 1990 Nicaraguan elections when the people of that country "cried uncle" and voted for the CIA collaborator, Violeta Chamorro." (John Stockwell ,former CIA Chief of Station)

The US terrorist war in Nicaragua is a total horror story. The "infectious virus" Randolph Ryan warned about was the "threat of a good example" which was Nicaragua's successful independant development. Ryan was invoking the domino theory/mafia doctrine. Oxfam, the British charitable relief and development organization observes:

But it was not to last. BBC News put the Contra War "in context:"

The technical meaning of the term "democracy" can be understood here.
