They've been maneuvering and doing things that are counter to US and Western interests.

While Leon Panetta was still Secretary of Defense, he said this:

If you have Google News, I'd suggest making a section 'BRICS' because they're going to be making a lot of waves in our direction.

But in their own best interests, which is what all countries do.

I think they are more motivated to maneuvering and doing things that are in their best interests.
You think that being the only superpower on the planet is a "god given" right of america and nobody should challenge it?

Its called competition, and can't imagine any "real" american being afraid of that, since it is an integral component of the free market that the right continuallly whinges about.

Interesting that BRICS doesn't approve of US & European Q.E. Part n actions.

And defending Tehran and Assad is predictable given Russian involvement.

Sure. Problem being is, their interests and our interests are colliding on several levels. I am an American. Though I want my country to do the "right thing," and get upset when it does wrong, I nevertheless stand alert when foreign enemies threaten my homeland with their deeds. For this coalition of emerging economic powerhouses pose grave danger to the United States.

    If you recall: http://www.reuters.com/article/2009/07/06/us-china-economy-currencies-sb-idUSTRE5650WO20090706

This is going to be a very serious issue.

So you care more about their interests than that of your own homeland? Maybe you're just not understanding the gravity of the situation.

Of course they're motivated by enlightened self-interest, same as everyone, same as the US government. But I am an American. My interests naturally fall with America when my country is threatened by others. I never thought that was a complicated concept before, but apparently people are confused about their loyalties when we're being challenged by a coalition of countries.

I don't know what God has to do with it, but we are the #1 superpower, and personally, I'd prefer to have a length qualitative edge over our adversaries. For, if you don't know, the barbarians are still out there. And if they so want to challenge our position at the top... well, I'd venture to say that it is going to be one hell of a "king of the mountain" escapade.

You are being way too cavalier with American lives and livelihoods. As well, naive to the situation. If for example, China does take down the dollar as they've said they wanted to, which I'm sure the others BRICS have adopted as going policy. If you call that competition, you need your head examined. We live in a world of realpolitik with a veneer of hope and pretend. They're a threat and need to be treated as such.

No, I try to care about them equally though if I'm honest, I care more about my interests than those of my homeland, BRICS, the West or you.

My point was that you seemed to expect the BRICS to care more about our interests than their own while at the same time caring more about our interests than theirs yourself. It seems like a double standard.

I am fully aware of realpolitik. How in the hell do you think america got to number 1? Or was that whole cold war thing resolved with hope and pretend?

Its competition without many rules, which was exactly how America built its "empire". Are these other countries a "threat" to america's position? of course. is avis a threat to hertz?

I have sympathy for others, but this isn't a time to have wavering thoughts over sensibilities.

I don't know how you inferred that, but I do care about our interests more.

So what? We have been "threatening other people's homelands" for our own interests since ww2 because we had the economic and military power to do so.
Are you surprised that the balance of power is changing? Did you think that it would last forever?
Are you prepared to go to war now to maintain our crumbling hegemony over the world?
