It passed that point a long time ago. Not just inhumane, it is irrational and very expensive. That might be explained by the significant political influence of the prison guard's union.
Something else that's relevant to this debate: All sorts of different things are now classified as felonies now that weren't in the past. It's not just the usual "rape, rob, murder" that everyone typically thinks of. somewhat related thread that brings up a few of these issues: Do you think it makes sense to prohibit guns to felons?
I'll play devil's advocate here. Please show us where in the Constitution it say that ex-felons lose their rights?
most felonies are not violent crimes - if we do not want them to regain their rights, give them lwop... simple, once they have done their time all rights shoudl be restored
And I guess no one has ever been in the situation before....As the Judge knows the all jurors names and backgrounds....And you do know the same is for the lawyers on both sides as they can throw anyone out they choose.... So just some more California bashing from ignorant fools again?....Sure looks that way!
And they are obsessed with the state they don't even live in. I don't waste my time posting about other states that do idiotic things. Alabama is an example that comes to mind.
Actually, I think felons on a jury wouldn't be a bad thing. I think they might take it more seriously having been on the other end. Most jurors have no idea of the real life consequences of their decisions. I have no problem with this if a felon has served out their sentence. Surely not an end of the world thing.
Those would be weeded out in the jury selection process. They are pretty careful when it comes to conflicts such as that.
End the idiotic war on drugs and within 10 years the prison population could be cut in half. People in jail for possessing or selling drugs should be cut loose immediately. If drugs were decriminalized and were available to the public like cigarettes and alcohol, gang violence would decrease exponentially. Then the police and courts could focus on protecting people from violence and property crimes. Violent criminals are getting plea bargained down and released early after not receiving any kind of rehabilitation so that there is space for people who are practicing free enterprise and responding to the free market. And yes, the Prison guard Union, defense attorneys, judges and prosecutors will do everything they can to keep their cash cow drug war going.
Another example of a past 'felon' who should be allowed to serve on juries: Man arrested with guns while moving interstate, raises some legal issues
So, it makes sense for a left-winger to hate their own left-wing state because of the high taxes and regulations and move to a free red state with lower taxes and less regulations?
While I understand the apprehension, if one is going to trial, their lawyer can remove that potential juror due to their background.
A never ending source of head scratching. Really wish either the people grow a brain and throw out all the corrupt crap currently holding office or if not, I think that state should be tossed out of the union. And that goes for that entire coastline. America would be far better off if Trump extended the wall from Mexico all the way up to Canada cutting off those coast states altogether. Total travesty how degraded those beautiful places are now which have become worse than third world countries with homeless everywhere deffacating in the streets.
As usual in true progressive liberal form, rather than recognizing the real problem which is illegal immigration and idiotic dumbed down relaxed sentences, legislators would rather go the other direction and become even more laxed allowing criminals back out on the streets to wreak havoc on the masses. Great going to the morons in Cali who keep voting those asses back into office every term.
The average IQ in California (95) is the 3rd lowest in the country. They don't exactly have a brain trust going on over there. https://www.inc.com/bill-murphy-jr/...in-all-50-states-results-are-eye-opening.html
The west coast would be well off not having to spend tax dollars on welfare recipients living in the red states. That's for sure.
Sheesh....we only have the biggest high tech firms located here. Don't be jealous By the way, that article provided zero scientific back up how they arrived at their conclusion = fake news.
Next violent felons will be hired as prison wardens. Who understands the poor, violent felons better?
Probably only 40% of inmates should be incarcerated for any length of time. If a felon has served his time, then he has paid for his crime.
I think we need to differentiate conventional felons (rapists, murderers, robbers, thieves and fraudsters who have stolen a lot of money) from felons in general who have simply run afoul of some stupid law, or didn't really do anything that bad. There are all sorts of victimless crimes that are classified as felonies now (and no, not just talking about drugs). This is really a whole separate issue. I'd post it in the Law & Justice section, but who ever looks there?
