Haven't you been paying attention to the rail crisis? Compare British costs per mile with our European competitors. We have engineered a system which maximises exploitation while maintaining the constant threat of bail outs. Indeed, empirical evidence shows that investment was significantly more effective in the days of British Rail.

Ignoring reality makes you a walking example of fake news.

Give me one example of a government initiative or intervention which has gone according to plan - just one?

Already have and it's a big one under threat by market fundamentalism: the NHS

So what exactly has brought the NHS to its knees, and why should politicians care when they all have private health insurance cover?

Insisting on repetition all the time just isn't cricket! Hope you have your sarcasm goggles on.

The NHS has been deliberately underfunded. This has been used to try and break down public support and legitimise the Tory privatisation programme.

I think it would be political suicide for any government to overtly do that. On the other hand, we only have May's word at PMQs when she keeps parroting on about more doctors, more nurses, more money - who would know?

I don't know, have tax revenues increased in proportion to the increase in population? If yes, I'd say maybe you're right. If no, then you have some explaining to do...

My comment wasn't referring to a future agenda. It is actively pursued now. Whole services are being privatised. We're seeing, for example, public health services replaced with Virgin call centres

I'm not being facetious, but do you have a reliable link for that, because I'd like to find out more about it. I keep my ear to the newscasts and I've never heard it mentioned.

The correct comparison, given the increase in health demands, is per capita. That is falling substantially. The Kings Fund put it concisely:

"If spending kept pace with growth in the economy, by 2020/21 the UK NHS would be spending around £158 billion at today's prices – £16 billion more than planned."

You need to delve deeper obviously. Contracts going to Virgin have been occurring for some time (e.g. chosen randomly: http://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/...ex_will_be____guinea_pigs____for_outsourcing/). Virgin suing the NHS gave the game away somewhat!
