This is a prescient point. Shale oil as it sits now is a giant ponzi scheme. The companies involved have been losing money and have huge debt.

The problem is that the decline rate of these wells is rapid. 30% the first year and another 30% the second - and that is in best areas - prime locations as opposed to the no so prime ones.

This means that if you drill 10 wells ... you have to drill 10 more over 3 years just to maintain production - never mind increase it. Even though the 10 wells drilled originally are producing bugger all - they still have to be maintained so in year 3 you are having to take care of 20 wells but getting the production of 10. This situation gets worst with time.

To "increase production" you obviously have to drill more than 10 over the next 3 years. The increase in production has caused the costs of drilling to skyrocket - despite better drilling technology. The process takes huge amounts of frac sand and water along with Trucks to hual all this stuff. Increased oil prices have increased profitability but the costs of fuel for trucks has also increased.

Every year the costs increase - more wells to take care of- increase costs of drilling and so on. At the same time they are drilling through the prime areas and having to get into the more moderate formations.

Investment in increased production has already started to wane . BHP invested 20 billion in oil sand and they have pulled out altogether - the CEO calling it a mistake to have gone that direction.

 

NATO was about providing a deterrence to the Soviet Union. Now it's about a deterrence to Russia. And some Americans are opposed to NATO?
