China is able to put 14 bullet trains into operation quickly, with own designs, why not US?

The NE corridor is profitable account of its population density. Other Amtrak routes are not profitable account of lower density. The lower the density the more the government subsidy.

Dead is dead, but I support your freedom to choose. If a person would rather ride Amtrak than an airliner, that's what they should do.

I think the answer here is relatively simple. Not the solution, but the answer. In a word- Government. In this country getting anything done is like an old saying I heard about mating elephants. Everything takes place at a high level (in our case, Congress) and there is a great deal of posturing, positioning and a lot of snorting and bellowing that may go on for a very long time. Then, if anything happens, it still takes two years to get results. Now that's for elephants. With government, all the factors are subject to significant multipliers, and the odds of nothing happening or the result being mutant offspring that fail to survive goes way up too.

As my muse spirit Charles Kettering once said-
"If you want to kill any idea in the world, get a committee working on it."

FACT IS, we have a PROBLEM funding capital equipment. Each man, on his own, is not FAST enough productivity. We are competing against commies that scoff at your fear of, GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY.

Instead of raising every ones taxes and doing things like improve our rail system or provide medical care for everyone (like most of the world has/is doing) trump wants to reward his financial supporters by lowering their taxes.

It's easy to do things like that in a totalitarian dictatorship not so much a Democracy.

The crux should be why we need to invest in bullet trains at all. Kasich in Ohio returned $480 million, that Obama earmarked for high speed rail that served no purpose. Amtrac is a disaster as it is. Improving urban rail makes sense, high speed interstate doesn't.

It would be in the US.

We have neither the population density or Geography to have bullet trains in a cost effective and productive manner.

Please, provide me with a link to federal subsidies Amtrac receives vs. passengers it serves. Don't get me wrong ... I've taken scenic Amtrac tours and they were wonderful. Amtrac as a viable, sustainable commuter rail service IS a disaster.

Two thirds of Chinese families do not own a vehicle. I guess the OPer never thought of that.

I suppose I'm just going to have to resign myself to repeating stuff to you again and again and again. Amtrak is profitable only in the Northeast corridor the rest of the system is not profitable again I'm being repetitious here God this crap is boring. National Rail systems around the world are all subsidized by their governments. Describing any of that as a disaster is just crap. Countries make decisions on where to spend money and we don't spend a lot on rail for obvious reasons.

If you can't figure out what the federal subsidy per Amtrak passenger is maybe the Internet isn't for you
