I lived through both eras.

In the 50 s, Syria’s economy was comparable to Europe’s. It is said that Mahathir!ohammad testified at that time that he would like to see Malaysia achieving similar progress.

After the Baath Party took power, economy deteriorated, Syria’s resources became a fair play to the Assad family.

Worst was when Bashar Assad took power after his Dictator father died.

Its quite true that Israel's Clean Break Strategy called for Syria to be isolated and destabilized in 1994.. but that's not what happened or what cause the civil war.
