Your explanation is simple and accurate. .. but I doubt some of these posters ever heard of the Ugarit, Ras Shamra or north coast Canaanites.
But according to the Bible and History your god is Elohim. And Elohim has 'sons' - lesser gods. The northern Kingdom of Israel worshipped Elohim. The southern Kingdom of Judah worshipped Jahweh - in simple terms.
Elohim was speaking to the other gods of the Canaanites. If you study history, you will see where religion evolved over time. There was no sudden universal truth.
Then you'll remain ignorant because you cannot bear to be wrong. Thomas Gray (18th Century Rnglish poet) wrote 'Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise'. Translation 'Not knowing something is often more comfortable than knowing it.'
And you've never bothered to question anything your Bible 'teachers' tell you. Now THAT is naivety or stupidity.
Not at all. I hate to see people wasting their lives believing impossible things. I did once but I woke up to reality.
Sadly, you didn't weaken my faith and get a trophy for the evil one that is speaking through you and using you to hurt the One True Living God. Praise the Lord and victory in Jesus.
Sounds as though there are people here with "beliefs" that at least one god exists...and others with "beliefs" that none exist. That's to be expected. Six of one... Anyway...as to the question suggested by the title to this thread... ...nearly as I can tell, Christianity IS subject to the essential implications and strictures of the Old Testament. After the advent of Christianity, is there any reason to suppose the god of the Bible ceased to be offended by the things that offended it earlier?
Reading through this thread I was waiting for someone to point these out. It is uplifting to me to respond to someone that diligently searches the scriptures. It is quite a contrast to those that pretend to have knowledge based on their own wisdom. I don't honestly know why they waste their time on this subject...something they reject. Could it be the prompting of the Holy Spirit?
We know that Jesus said He came not to do away with the Old but rather to fulfill it. For those of us that desire to know Him intimately, we include in our desires, what He came to fulfill. History can be modified to be" His Story."
Isaiah chapter 7, Micah chapter 5, Zechariah chapter 9, Psalms chapter 22, Psalms chapter 41, Isaiah chapter 53 to name a few all refer to the One who would come to redeem all men who would come to Him.. Only if you take them out of context.
That is a good question Frank. I suspect God is offended by behavior now as He was then. What I do know is that before Christ, the Nation of Israel was under the Law. They were given the Law because they felt that through the law (as well as sacrifices), they would be justified through their own actions (works). The more we understand that, the better we understand the New. The lesson of the Old is that although Israel had direct communication with God, He honored their own choices and they proved to be failures. God is the same yesterday today and forever. The New Dispensation that we are under is the dispensation of Grace. All that is required is that we recognize God is Holy, we fall short, and that we believe God provided a Way. (a foreshadow of this is when Abraham, while obeying God, went to sacrifice Israel, and the sacrificial lamb appeared. Abraham proclaimed God has provided a Way.) Jesus is that provision. In a sense, we owe Israel a debt of gratitude for the example they showed us in how we fail under the law. Their were several, however, that exemplified an indisputable amount of Faith. Without Faith it is impossible to be pleasing to God.
