Clarence Thomas: A Black Person' (Thomas: Obama Only President Because He's What 'Elites' Expect'

The Huffington Post | By Nick Wing | 05/03/2013 3:19 pm EDT
    Excerpts:

“Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas doesn't speak much on the job, but during an interview last month at Duquesne Law School in Pittsburgh, Pa., he offered some candid insight into his thoughts about politics and President Barack Obama.

Asked if Obama's election as the first black president came as a surprise, Thomas said it didn't, claiming that he'd always believed a black person would become president one day.

He went on to say, however, that Obama had only been elected because the president won over the elites and media, something Thomas argued most black people must do in order to advance.

"The thing that I always knew is that it would have to be a black president who was approved by the elites and the media, because anybody they didn’t agree with, they would take apart," Thomas said in a clip that surfaced on Friday. "You pick your person. Any black person who says something that is not the prescribed things that they expect from a black person will be picked apart."

Thomas's comments have since been picked up by a number of outlets and are being considered by some as a subtle jab at Obama. Adam Winkler, a professor at the University of California School of Law, told Mother Jones that the remarks were out of character for a sitting Supreme Court justice.

"Thomas seems more interested in becoming a Fox commentator than preserving the integrity of the Court," he said. "Justices should not take pot shots at the president. It's beneath the dignity of the court."

At the Duquesne Law School event, Thomas went on to explain that he had met Obama before, but had never spoken with the president at length. He also said that he wasn't really interested in politics.

"I just don't like politics," he said. ‘I'm just done ... I like history, I like things of substance; I don't understand politics.’ "

    ........

IMO: Professor Winkler is correct in his assertion that Justice Thomas should not be taking shots at a sitting president, as it really should be beneath the dignity of the Court. But Thomas seems to have some of the bad manners of Scalia that must be rubbing off on him. He goes along with everything Scalia suggests, and Scalia is not exactly known for his love of Democrats nor for his good manners.

In the years that Thomas has been on the USSC, it is difficult who is the puppet and who is the puppeteer between Thomas and Scalia as they are both conservative republicans and appear to work as a unit. But here is an associate chief justice who is not interested in politics, does not like politics, and doesn’t understand politics. So why is he on the Supreme Court?

That figures in with President Bush’s determination to have Thomas join the USSC. and so nominated him for the office. That should have told us something right there. Thomas is a rejuvenated Uncle Tom with no regard to the dignity of his race when he becomes a tool of the republican party. He doesn’t have to think anymore just follow Scalia’s orders.

Thomas is a disgrace to the Supreme Court, to the people of America, and to his race. He needs to go.

"Thomas is a rejuvenated Uncle Tom..."

    Racist much?

Once again , we see who the RACISTS ARE, don't we?

Thomas rose out of JIM CROW, to sit on the USSC.

Justice Thomas was making a statement about the media and he was correct. And how dare that (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) marry a white girl!

A sitting member of the court should not be doing this, but while I think Justice Thomas is a bad jurist calling him an Uncle Tom is racist. Just because he is black he shouldn't have to think a certain way. Yes he can forget how he got where he was and he can use race as he did in his confirmation hearing and look like a hypocrite. But anyone can have their own beliefs, just because he is black doesn't mean he can't be wrong about things.

Obama had to win over the media and the Democratic establishment to win the 2008 election and Obama skilfully avoided major political blunders during the campaign. Obama always has right things to say to please the media and Thomas is not as eloquent as Obama. But Thomas went through the same experience as a black man before he was approved the GOP establishment and he deliberately refused to show sympathies to the civil rights movement to advance his career because undermining his blackness was necessary to gain approval.

Associate Justice Thomas isn't African American. All African Americans are extreme leftists. That's why it's possible to characterize all African Americans as ideological enemies.

Truth cannot be constructed. To live in ideology is, as Havel so eloquently reminds us, inevitably to live in a lie. Truth can only be revealed. We cannot be creators, only receptors.” James W. Sire

maybe... but defining everything by your ideology and assigning ideology to millions of people you have never met is clearly not reality or truth... and then declaring them enemies by default is not sane.
