Nuclear energy has not failed. All US aircraft carriers and fleet submarines are nuclear powered as are the submarines of our potential adversaries - Russia and China, as well as our allies. And several countries get a far larger share of their electrical power than us.

 

Solar and wind haven't failed, either. Neither has gas.

 

Seriously? Solar fails every day (it's called sunset) - it's called sunset. Wind failures are less predictable but frequent = fortunately, gas and coal sources are there to back them up.

 

Germany's abandonment of nuclear energy was a policy fail.

 

How does Iowa live with itself? I mean, with their highest form of fuel for electricity being wind.

Reports say that China is about to deliver solar panels that produce far more per sq ft than what their current panels produce. Since they are the leaders, this is going to be interesting.

 

The progress made in small compact reactors certainly suggests more investment in that path. Our Navy's decades long record in operating reactors should make it a technology worth exploring, but the word "nuclear" upsets certain special interests.

 

I'm not so sure. Do you have a cite for that?

I've been following nuclear energy plants designed and being constructed in the UK.

It appears that nuclear power is still incredibly expensive and plants take a long time to build - even when they are built on sites already used for nuclear power generation.

 

I know there are some who whine about danger.

But, I do not see evidence of that being the reason that nuclear power isn't being pursued with serious determination.

As per above, there are other problems with nuclear.

 

Are we gonna go through the "Iowa" debate again?

And where do the materials to make those panels come from and is it mined in ecologically safe methods (answer is NO). And do they work in the dark?

And you think wind farms and solar panel fields are any better? Considering the efficiency differences, e.g 24h/day availability vs %? availability.

 

I don't see the need to damage of destroy the environment to pursue illogical and uneconomic solutions.

What's missing from your cite is that wind and solar are cheaper than nuclear power by a LOT.

And, that was a root reason for the change.

Please note that this is echoed in the UK, where the expense of nuclear power is considered a very real issue.

What I really dislike is these journals that claim to be all about good energy policy, but in the end are merely shills for a particular interest group.

 

What I like is that solar and wind produce lost cost electricity.

Nuclear plants produce electricity that is FAR more expensive than what average customers pay today.

As for the environment, look above to see Big Coal attempt to bulldoze whole towns in order to destroy the environment.

Plus, it has so far not been possible for private enterprise to build nuclear plants. So, it becomes a government decision concerning your tax dollars.

Given your general trend toward the right wing concern about costs and your new found environmentalism, I really do NOT know how you can get so tied up with nuclear.

I'm indifferent to the cost of wind and solar. Germany shut down their nuclear plants out of fear.


The last nuclear power plant in Germany will cease operation in December 2022. This definitive end-date is part of the 2011 Nuclear Energy Act (Atomgesetz) which withdrew the authorisation to operate nuclear reactors for power generation according to a phase-out schedule.Aug 16, 2022

Nuclear has been shut down in Germany, because the price of nuclear electricity is incredibly high. One can see that in the nuclear project plans in UK, too, though those projects are still under construction.

The issue with government allowing cities to be bulldozed in order to create coal mines is self explanatory.

I don't know about you, but I would not be in favor of MY neighborhood being bulldozed. I like my home. I like my neighbors.
