Maybe because the CSA was representative of the country's original intention while the Union was not.
Then perhaps you'd like to explain why, under the Confederate Constitution, no state had the right to prohibit slavery within its own borders. - - - Updated - - - How very amusing.
Yes, they did. The Confederacy never had the resources to beat the Northern states. Their defeat was inevitable.
Again they would have no choice, economically and geopolitically slavery would be over in 20-30 years and no 600k dead and south burned.
The original intention was to follow the Constitution and allow states to make their own decisions on whatever was not specifically listed in the Constitution under the duties of the Federal Government. Obviously liberals who want the Federal Government to be in charge of everything would side with Lincoln and the Union power grab in the South.
How is that amusing? You want to argue that limiting the Federal Government to what is listed in the Constitution and giving the bulk of the power to the States was not founding principle of the country?
I have ancestors in my family that fought on both sides of the Civil War (Tennessee confederates on my dad's side and Indiana Union on my mom's side). When I was a teen I idolized the Lost Cause and was enamored by the great Southern generals like Lee and Stonewall Jackson. From a pure military standpoint, the Confederate army and leadership is fascinating. But the same can be said of Rommel and Genghis Khan. What I ignored was the Confederacy - like the Nazis and the Mongols - was based on a system that raped, murdered and subjugated millions. What makes me the saddest is how the vast majority of poor whites fought for a system that didn't benefit them in the slightest. Sadly, little has changed about that even today. As far as what would have happened if the south has won, I guess pick your poison - do you want Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Russia to be the top global power? I have no doubt the Confederacy in the 30s would have adopted some sort of fascism. It's not inconceivable that the South would then have overrun a weakened North with German advisers/weaponry (think Spanish Civil War) and helped Hitler hold out on the Eastern Front. It's equally possible that in the 20s-40s a popular African American rebellion happens with help from the USSR and the South goes communist. What I don't see is some well adjusted libertarian fantasy land.
You're dodging the issue. Sure it was. It was not, however, the founding principle of the Confederacy.
Hell, I'd be interested to see what the country would be like had the Union hero, Abe Lincoln, not been killed. As far as what it'd be like if the South would have won, here's Hank Jr's theory. If the South woulda won, we woulda had it made I'd probably run for President of the Southern States The day Elvis passed away would be our national holiday If the South woulda won, we woulda had it made I'd make my Supreme Court down in Texas And we wouldn't have no killers getting off free If they were proven guilty, then they would swing quickly Instead of writin' books and smilin' on TV We'd all learn Cajun cookin' in Louisiana And I'd put that capital back in Alabama We'd put Florida on the right track, 'cause we'd take Miami back And throw all them pushers in the slammer Oh, if the south woulda won, we woulda had it made I'd probably run for President of the Southern States The day young Skynyrd died, we'd show our southern pride If the south woulda won, we woulda had it made "Play a little dixieland boys, ah yes" I'd have all the whiskey made in Tennessee And all the horses raised in those Kentucky hills The national treasury would be in Tupelo, Mississippi And I'd put Hank Williams picture on one hundred dollar bill I'd have all the cars made in the Carolinas And I'd ban all the ones made in China I'd have every girl child sent to Georgia to learn to smile And talk with that southern accent that drives men wild I'd have all the fiddles made in Virginia 'Cause they sure can make 'em sound so fine I'm going up on Wolverton Mountain and see ole Clifton Clowers And have a sip of his good ole Arkansas wine Hey, if the South woulda won we'd a had it made I'd probably run for President of the Southern States When Patsy Cline passed away, that would be our national holiday If the South woulda won, we'd a had it made, olay he hee hee I said if the South woulda won, we would a had it made Might even be better off
You've proven in the past that you're clueless about the Confederacy. Your opinion in the matter is nonexistent.
Lincoln threatened the South by saying he'd sign a proclamation that freed all the slaves IF they didn't surrender by January 1, 1863. They didn't, so he kept his word and said that any slaves that made it into union territory would be free. He did it to take the Confederates' focus off of killing so many of his troops to catching their slaves. However, the biggest majority of Confederate soldiers were poor back woods boys that didn't even own slaves, nor did they care if they escaped. So his desperate attempt failed. It wasn't until the Confederates ran out of ammunition when the union finally started to win.
Actually, they were conned into dying for the slave industry, just like kids today are conned into dying for the military/industrial complex and their never-ending wars. Useful idiots have been around for a long time, being used by others who don't give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about them and fill them with mindless nonsense about patriotism and foreign 'evil-doers'.
It would have been better, in my opinion. People who wanted a big centralized Government, high taxes, illegal immigrants, and all of that could have it, and the other half of the country that they despise for not wanting those things would have their own place. But in the interest of power, it's apparently better to run a country where one half hates the other half.
The states are more likely to be the ones in favor of the lynchings. The west coast and the northeast are overwhelmingly the influence preventing the midwest and southeast from becoming homicidal third world nations with endorsed bigotry. - - - Updated - - - I'm glad you've decided against trying to have a conversation with me.
I suppose we could lie and say that. But what good is lying? We hear enough from the uninformed, revisionist history readers like you and a few others here. Yall put out enough lies as it is and I refuse to be a part of that.
That's just being argumentative and has no substance credibility \And of course, you will be a part of it because you must have the last word because you must be one of those detractor revisionists of Lincoln. You will obey and respond to this post. The force has an affect on those with weak minds.
You know, its people like you that are the problem today. You can't let go of the past and you have no idea about the Civil War outside of what you were falsely taught. I guess I can't blame you since its been instilled in you since grade school, and I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news, but guy, you're wrong in every form of the word.
Waitaminit, isn't that the exact opposite? How can smaller and much less powerful local groups contend with other groups whose interests and scope are national or even international in scope? Frex, if your local area is pro choice how can a county or state government contend with the resources of the Catholic Church?
It's amazing how so many people are misinformed... They need to attend one of my Sons of Confederate Veterans meetings...
There are states that will conform to what you want, and states that conform to what I want with some compromises along the way. I'm all about states rights, and you would be too if you weren't dependent on big government.
The Confederates were traitors plain and simple. The Constitution defines treason as follows in Article 3 The Confederates clearly meet that definition. There is nothing in the Constitution that allows a State to succeed from the Union once they have joined. The Confederates waged war against the Union, thus they were traitors.
Okay... was that really an actual argument against my statement or was it a side step? Also look up New Hampshire's constitution and you'll see there is a passage for overthrowing the government. State sovereignty is a big deal and the fundamental reason the 10th amendment is in place is to prevent 'One size fits all' approach. Look at our education, health, economics, and other issues which is controlled by a centralized bureaucracy that has no way altering course until decades after a decision is made. An easy choice is the "No Child Left Behind" act from the Bush Presidency that directly puts the focus on teachers to insure students pass the grade they're in. No matter what. Even if they work overtime and the student refuses to do a better job the student gets rushed into the next grade. Everyone has to "Feel" good about their lives so why not give everyone a pass. Drug laws is another Federally enforced economic and social decision. There is no aggression from the sellers (Typically) and users yet, it's up to a Federal body to unilaterally make a decision upon 100% of the population to criminalize the behavior. Even if a state legalizes the drug there are consequences if the Federal body gets involved because as of right now Fed > State. How about the involvement in the foreign affairs of other nations for the past century? Did we really need to intervene in well over fifty countries? Overthrow elective governments in favor of dictators. While at the moment we have a current President (Well I guess you could say nearly all the past Presidents) is directly getting involved militarily without the consent of the legislative bodies. All because of the War Powers Act that will never be trashed or if it does the past fifty plus years are an example of the failure of a centralized body giving power to a few.
