You can make a loaf of bread for the cost of a loaf of average price bread. People just don't do it. Calorie for calorie is meaningless. A fat person can suffer from malnutrition as readily as someone who weighs 80 pounds.

I haven't tried bread because I do better not eating bread even though I'm not gluten intolerant or anything. I just have less appetite for junkfood if I don't eat bread. So I have to trust you are correct on this, if so it is well worthwhile to make one's own bread but bread is somewhat fortified and if the flour isn't, there goes some vitamins. I have no idea if flour is fortified or not, never looked.

And indeed, many in poverty are currently suffering from both obesity and malnutrition.

There are lots of type of flour, but you are correct on what happens with bread. That was observed in India when access to affordable, plentiful flour brought with it the cravings for junkfood for the masses. I seldom make my own bread (other than cornbread), but my mom used to make it often when we were growing up.

It is not restricted to poor people (obesity and malnutrition), but I am sure it is more widespread among that demographic. It is like the McDouble being the best calorie purchase in fast food, but God should strike down anybody who thinks people should live off the dollar menu items just because they are affordable.

I am trying to do better with my food choices even though I am not on welfare or especially over weight. It has just gotten so the thought of most foods I used to eat, especially fast food, is increasingly repulsive. I grow most of my veg at home most of the year. It is just a matter of finding new recipes and new things to go with them.
