Are modern blacks disadvantaged at all? Do they still suffer from some of the effects of slavery/jim crow?
Taxcutter says: No. Slavery ended a century and a half ago. Jim Crow ended a half century ago. There has been equal opportunity afforded. In many cases African-Americans have availed themselves of this opportunity. Viz: Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, Oprah Winfrey, and (dare I say it?) Hussein Obama. African-Americans who are willing to do what is required of anyone seeking such positions have reached the pinnacles of every field of endeavor.
The only disadvantage African-Americans have is that they were sold into slavery to the state by the very same ass clowns that were supposed to be watching their backs, their own damn leadership. You want a real laugh - at least if your sense of humor runs to the darkside a bit - Tune in the next NAACP convention. there you see cats in 3000 dollar suits with wives wearing outfits of the sort that are usually reserved for H'wood red carpet affairs, (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)in' about how whitey is holding 'em back. One has to either laugh or cry because the only other choice when one is faced with hypocrisy on that grand a scale is a machinegun and don't want to see anyone murdered.
If I was black and had the same education and intellect, I would be killing it (though may would think I am already ). Society aches for exceptional blacks. Society lauds and celebrates them; gives them every chance to succeed. All any willing and able black has to do is want it, and lose the entitlement chip on their shoulders, and the presumptive attitude of racism and disempowerment.
Some blacks come out ahead. This conclusively demonstrates that blacks don't face more problems than whites. - - - Updated - - - Good thing it would be just as easy for you to achieve your education as a black person.
It's at Ole Miss. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ole_Miss_riot_of_1962 & at the University of Michigan http://www.npr.org/2013/10/15/232046290/supreme-court-returns-to-affirmative-action-in-michigan-case
It would have been easier as a black person. Racial quotas just cry out for minorities who are academically superior.
there are no white college funds listed in either of these articles. one is about affirmative action and the other is about segregation in the 60s
Successful blacks do not talk like the average black. They enunciate and are deliberate with their language skills. I do not hear successful blacks saying, "know whad I'm talkin' 'bout" every sentence. The disadvantage here is their inability to realize how well communication skills relate to the education they have or do not have. Education = Success.
Taxcutter says: The Ole Miss incident was a part of the death throes of (Democratic) government racism - aka Jim Crow. That was 52 years ago. The University of Michigan case involved "reverse Jim Crow" - aka Affirmative Action. It's time that everyone acknowledge that the day of government-sanctioned racism is long gone and focus on MLK, Jr.s goal of a color-blind society. The Israelites only wandered in the wilderness for forty years. It's time for America to enter the promised land.
Taxcutter says: Indeed, for white, black, Hispanic, Asian, or anybody else good communication skills are paramount to success. Teaching subjects in foreign languages (or Ebonics) does student no favor. Such policies should be abandoned in public schools.
