The tip of the iceberg, perhaps? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_brutality_in_the_United_States#Investigation When one has a situation where the police are policing themselves and their own behaviour, it can't come as any surprise that I have a cynical reaction.
Probably not. Americans wouldn't stand for it. Watch. The reaction to this incident won't be favorable to the police and, in the end, we'll see a mea culpa, however slight, from the Houston Independent School District Police Department.
People in the other first world democracies are taught that teachers/educators are above them, and that they need to be extremely respectful of these people lest they be kicked out of school and be made a laughing stock.
I will never understand how conservatives, a group of people constantly talking about government take over and secession and civil war, has such complete trust and respect for anyone in an authority position. It makes no sense. If you want to protect against government take over start with complaining when the cops (*)(*)(*)(*) up.
School rules are and they have the power and authority to enforce them. They have the power and authority to take over the matter at the request of the school officials and if the student refuses their lawful orders arrest the student.
She was on the phone with her mother when the teacher was telling her to put the phone away and to hand it over. Administrators are perfectly justified in calling the police when students become unruly an uncooperative, you never know when one is going to pull out a gun these days do you. They do it for their own protection and that of the other students. They acted perfectly correctly it was the student who did not handle the situation correctly by saying "yes ma'am" and putting her phone away. - - - Updated - - - You asked Go look up what "under color of law" means they you will have your answer. - - - Updated - - - Yes they were. Both the instructions from the school administrators and then after the student refused to comply and ratcheted it up to a police matter.
School rules are entirely enforceable and are singed agreements. No your son cannot refuse the instructions of the school administrators and remain in school. He is a minor in their charge and just as in any other public or even private place the owners/administrator can enforce their rules and regulations. Go try to talk on your cell phone in a movie theater, refuse to put it away and watch how fast they get the police there to escort you out and if you refuse to comply with their orders arrest you. - - - Updated - - - If you don't want you child to comply with the rules and regulations at the school we don't want your child there so do home schooling and let them talk on their phones while you try to teach them. - - - Updated - - - Yes I was just adding a little caveat to it. - - - Updated - - - Ignoring the direct order of a police officer and refusing to comply does. - - - Updated - - - I guess they could have TAZED her. - - - Updated - - - I asked what power did they abuse, care to answer? And YES these days ANYTIME a distrubance is reported at a school I expect mulitple units to respond and respond as fast as possible and quickly bring order to the situation even if the student(s) are refusing to comply with their lawful orders. AGAIN, the STUDENT caused the situation and what happened to her. A simple "yes ma'am" would have sufficed.
We don't but then I will never understand how liberals, a group of people who are constantly pushing for government to take over every asspect of our lives including the rearing of our children have such a lack of trust for anyone in those position to do so. It makes no sense. If you want such an authoritative government whom you believe is better equipped to raise our children stop complaining when they discipline them.
I love when people challenge authority... and then get smacked down where they belong as they start to cry foul. It makes me laugh. Moron. - - - Updated - - - Yeah, I am sure she busted out her phone and was immediately surrounded by the swat team. Not hardly. The school attempted to get her to comply with school rules, and she refused. When you challenge authority, the authority continues to step up compliance efforts until the person gives in. In this case, it took stepping up to the police and apprehension to get her to comply. Seems the girl was the stupid one....
While I agree, it still appears to be an overreaction. Suspend the kid and send her home. Putting her face in the floor and cuffing her isn't the way to handle the unruly use of a cell phone in school.
She had her opportunity, school policy and rules require she turn the phone over and it be picked up by her parents after school, she refused and got belligerent with the teacher, then the administrators then the police. This is what happens when you don't say "yes ma'am" and put your phone away and the refuse to comply with the lawful orders of the police. Let's hope the other students took notice.
Those other first world democracies aren't full of individualists. They went from nationalists to socialists. Neither convey individualism as a character trait.
Its no longer about the cell phone anymore. Its about disregard for authority both at the school level and the police level. If she simply would have respected authority and done what she was directed to do, it wouldn't have become an issue.
Disagreed. A gross overstatement, but given the post being responded too, smallblue could just as easily said "We were only following orders". So you think every citizen should always do as ordered by the Federal government and no one should protest?
