I would prefer an atheist president as they would not be tethered to the dogma of religion.

Do you believe that Bill Clinton was or is a Christian? I don't. He said he was but I think he said what he had to say to get elected. As for America being based upon Christian principles, that statement is only partially correct as America is based upon an amalgam of theistic (religious) and secular (Enlighten Movement) principles. If America is founded upon Christian principles then why does SCOTUS interpret the Constitution and not the Bible? If this is the part where you ask me why In God We Trust is on the dollar it is because of an overreaction to the Red scare in the 1950's that has no influence in how our government is run today.

By the way was slavery a Christian principle? How about a woman's place being right where a man said it was pre Woman's Suffrage?

Surely the point in a free country is that everybody (including a presidential candidate, successful or otherwise) should be equally free to follow their own personal faith (or lack of faith) of choice in their own way, as long as they do no harm to others through it, and don't try to force their opinion on anybody else?

How can anything else possibly make for a free country? Anything else is, by definition, religious oppression, and that certainly isn't compatible at all with freedom.

Your feminine pronoun was meant to convey your thoughts and belief system. Freudian slip, perhaps?

How did slavery and women needing to stay home, cook for their family, clean house and make babies get into the conversation? I'd be delighted to talk about their merits in today's society, but I'd get gigged for derailing the post like you're trying to do. :roflol:

you do have a point, many atheists say they are Christian, even more so in the past, so no one would ever know for sure

And no atheist running for political office would kill the deal by stating they were atheists.

There are too many Really Ignorant people who think being an atheist automatically makes you evil.

When it was stated that "this is still a nation based on Christian principles".

My experience with atheists is so long as I do not expect them to believe as I do they are pretty kool. Sadly I cannot say the same of some other theist who want all to live by their religious standards. There is intolerance on both sides and its wrong in both cases IMO.

I thought those were a given of women before the feminazis came into the picture, not reserved for Christians. I still think you were trying to derail the thread by bringing old world values into the debate. Yep, keep 'em barefoot and pregnant. That's every man's job for his woman. :roflol:

My use of the feminine was designed to avoid a pattern of always referring to future presidents as male and in that context, definitely conveys my thoughts and beliefs. I was not thinking of Hillary, because I knew she was a Methodist. She referenced her Methodist upbringing and beliefs in her last presidential. run. I don't need any 'Freudian slips' because I am upfront about my politics and where I stand on presidential candidates. This thread is about atheists in the oval office and Hillary does not qualify but other women might.

You have them swear on the constitution to uphold it. And if they violate their oath, impeach them (Rick Perry and Allan West would be good examples). No religious text is needed.

Not really, a religion is the belief in something, no matter how nonsensical.

No Atheism retty much fits the definition of Religion, it's right on the line next to cult, but people hate the word cult. There's a different between not beliving and Atheism which is beliving, just not in a one super being, which of course, other religions also have that.

Yes. I am a non-believer myself. I don't vote based on religious convictions.

My only concern with religion and government is to always be secularized. Allow the private sector to freely exhibit their freedom with their religion or lack of religion and the public sector to be secular. As long as they feel the same then I honestly could careless about what they feel about religion in regards to their personal life.

Funny, you have no idea what my sig is about. But I stand by my comment about atheists.
I have a few friends that decided to become atheists. You cant even mention religion around them without them losing their minds.

Religion or non-religion of a candidate doesn't bother me. It is all about this political views, competency, experience and whether I think he is up to the job.
