Changing age-related demographics seems to be what most experts are saying is responsible for the continuing decrease. 554 murders last year in Canada, a drop of 9% over prior year.
I used to think that the Conservatives were out of touch on crime, but after some reflection, the stiffening of penalties for crime are a reaction to dropping crime rates. I mean, what's the use of building all these new penitentiaries if there is no-one to house in them.
oh lordy Jenn crime is dropping because the boomers are aging and mellowing out...even the USA is backing away from the tough on crime stance, IT DOESN`T WORK!...
Living just west of Edmonton, and having heard of the 33rd murder this year, a man stabbed to death while sleeping on a bench, it seems to be official that my city is now the murder capital of Canada. Honestly around the little town I live in knowing this the message in the air is that of increased pressure. I sadly only go into Edmonton now when i have to, It seems to be get really bad out there
media sensationalism...you need take into account who is getting killed and who the killers are...these are generally criminals killing other criminals or people who associate with them...people like you or I are very unlikely to be killed because we don't live our lives in that strata of society...if in the extremely unlikely event either you or I were murdered it would be by someone you know in a domestic dispute, in that case you're just as likely to be killed in you're little town as you are in Edmonton...no amount of laws can deter death in domestic dispute...so feel safe going to Edmonton just don't wander the streets late at night in unsavory neighbourhoods or sleep on park benches...
Gosh.. I find that so hard to believe.. every news cycle there are senseless domestic murders, robberies and home invasions in Atlanta.
more poverty less education and a surplus of hanguns would explain that, USA's murder rate is twice that of Canada's per capita...Norway the scene of the latest mass killings despite having the softest penal system anywhere a surplus of guns, but a affluent, well educated population has murder rate of only .6 per capita... poverty/low education and a ready supply of handguns is a bad combination...
That's right. If you're not engaging in violent fights with your spouse or involved in drugs the chances of getting murdered are extremely rare. Stranger on stranger murders are so rare they do get a lot of media attention and contribute to the false perception that murder is more of a risk than the statistics would indicate.
