The Native American tribe known as the Illinois were exterminated by the Sioux before any White settler came to what is now the state of Illinois. Given the state's name it was natural that sports imagery for the new University of Illinois would have a Native American theme -- thus, Chief Illiniwek. Fast forward to the early 21st century when a lawsuit was filed to remove the Native American imagery. This resulted in the end of Chief Illiniwek and associated imagery. The young woman who filed the lawsuit was of Sioux descent, thus completing the work of ethnic cleansing begun by her ancestors.

That's not how "hate crimes" work, in fact I'm not aware of anything that's a "hate crime" to begin with - rather additional "hate" charges can be tacked onto a violent crime if it's specifically directed at a racial or ethnic group.

People need to stop using terms like "hate crime" in a sensationalist way that has no bearing on the real world.

 

Correct but terms like "braves, redskins, tomahawk chop", and so on are just generic pop cultural references to "Indians/Native Americans", not any specific tribe, heritage, or history.
