Because its a show-he wants a nationwide mandate, but has no problem with large groups of "peaceful" protesters.
What will count is the three presidential debates, and judging by how he did against Sanders (with no teleprompter either, no rehearsed words) I think Trump fans are exercising wishful thinking when they think Biden will just fold and look demented and be crushed by Trump in debates. If anything, I believe it's very possible - although not certain - that Biden may come out on top after the debates, given that he is much more sympathetic, much more emphatic, than the ever-scowling Trump. It's not just what you say, it's also how you say it. It's a televised debate. And it's not like Trump is very articulate either, much the opposite. Watch this:
There’s no doubt about it. Joe Biden is the man for the job. Our country needs Joe Biden. Did you watch Joe Biden accept the nomination to become our next president? How uplifting it is to hear a leader with a clear vision for our country; a leader who understands the daily struggle as millions of Americans battle a raging pandemic and a sputtering economy. How refreshing it is to nominate a unifier with moral clarity and an unrelenting drive to help all Americans regardless of creed, color, or any other identifier that Donald Trump uses to divide us. How inspiring it is to see a pair like Joe and Dr. Jill Biden, who so clearly love and believe in one another, and who together are greater than the sum of their individual selves. It’s all for nothing, however, if we do not ensure a resounding defeat of Trump in November. We must deliver him an undeniable and repudiating result on Election Day, or Trumpism will continue to ravage our nation. We’re entering the final stretch of this election. It is now or never for our future, our children’s future, and our Constitution. We can’t let evil and ignorance win. ... First part of a Lincoln Project email from Reed Galen. Hear, hear!
You know, he is running in an election. There will be political posturing. Don't you think Trump engages in the same? Don't you think virtually 100% of all politicians in all of humankind's history engage in the same? ----------- I'm not commenting upon the content of his words. I have my problems with the Dem platform. I'm exclusively commenting upon the performance. Tonight's performance was NOT that of a demented man. Again, this narrative in my opinion is likely to backfire on Trump, when voters think "what the hell is he talking about? Joe Biden is not demented!" It's similar to when in the primaries Dem candidates were bashing the economy, before the virus hit. I was thinking "what the hell are they talking about? That's a losing strategy because the economy has been good and we all know it."
Biden is a political has-been whos time has passed. Lots of vague platitudes and feel good nonsense isnt going to change 40 years of Biden being wrong on almost everything he tried to accomplish.
I agree that Biden will be a formidable debater after watching him tonight. Neither candidate will have teleprompters or ear pieces during live debates so it will surely offer a good side-by-side comparison.
Another interesting thing is that Joe Biden's speech was 100 times better than Kamala Harris' (whom I never liked, by the way). So again I wonder why in the hell he picked her. She doesn't seem to infuse a lot of passion into the ticket. She looked light-weight next to Biden, and given Biden's age, he should have picked a very inspirational veep. Harris sounds bland to me.
Maybe in substance but that's not how the people vote. It's the projected image that counts, unfortunately, and there's no doubt that tonight Joe Biden looked good.
I think it was CNN back in 2016 who gave Hillary the debate questions ahead of the debate (maybe MSNBC or some other network). Probably the only way Joe will do well in an ad lib debate is if he gets to prepare answers and Trump goes in blind.
Joe's campaign pulled him off the trail and put him in his basement early because when anyone challenges him in the slightest, he's a hot head (same or worse than Trump). In a live debate, all Trump has to do is trigger Joe into a temper tantrum, and that has proven not to be terribly difficult.
My comment was based on how Biden did yesterday. I wasn't sure what to expect given questions raised about him "hiding out" and "cognitive decline" prior to the Democratic National Convention. Beyond that, I believe both sides will be on the lookout for cheating especially given the number of concerns about voter fraud and suppression.
Trump is a master of TV and do you really vote for a president because he is sympathetic and emphatic? Should we elect a priest or something? About anybody looks good against Sanders and that wasn't the only debate and those debates had sympathetic moderators and questions. We'll see. Unfortunately people will actually vote before the first one.
He didn't drop out to insure he had some influence and a top speaking spot at the convention. And yes primary votes. Primaries are held for the benefit of the parties, it's there thing.
He did an ok to good job reading the teleprompter, no screw ups. "Vision", it's easy to say "I want a chicken in every pot" but how you gonna put it there. He stated lots of "goals" but no "vision" of how to accomplish them. Like his "On day one I will take control of the COVID virus", what the hell does that even mean? He has been quite devising when it comes to race even between blacks and hispanic but especially whites and black. What's going to do for me a white gut to be me together with him? We don't vote for first ladies and I know LOTS of wonderful couples who I would not vote for President. I vote for the person who will be better suited to run the country, be the executive and run it the most efficient and most effectively and insure our national security. Will bromides and platitudes really win in November? "Evil"?
My comment was a simple disagreement with your first comment about Biden's debate capability. He either goes silent or shows his true volatile temperament and blows up in a temper tantrum when challenged. Inability to maintain his cool at his own campaign rallies is the reason they pulled him off the campaign trail and stopped letting him talk without a teleprompter. I think the debates will be very tough for him, if they don't find an excuse to cancel.
Yes, neither candidate will have teleprompters, which is why it's going be the most hilarious debate in history, with the two of them barely able to string a coherent sentence together!
Yes, in one of the shortest speeches ever given at a convention read from a teleprompter after being rehearsed for months.
Chris Wallace: Biden Blew A Hole In Trump's Characterization Of Him, "Enormously Effective" Speech Posted By Ian Schwartz On Date August 21, 2020 Fox News's Chris Wallace praises Biden's speech: "I thought it was an enormously effective speech. Remember, Donald Trump has been talking for months about Joe Biden as mentally shot ... I thought that he blew a hole, a big hole in the characterization." pic.twitter.com/sChU4jBzw2 — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) August 21, 2020 'FOX News Sunday' host Chris Wallace praised Joe Biden's Democratic presidential nomination speech on a panel with Dana Perino, Brit Hume, and Karl Rove. "I thought it was an enormously effective speech," Wallace said. "Remember, Donald Trump has been talking for months about Joe Biden as mentally shot, a captive of the left. And, yes, Biden was reading from a teleprompter and a prepared speech but I thought that he blew a hole, a big hole in the characterization." ... https://www.realclearpolitics.com/v...ation_of_him_enormously_effective_speech.html
What Chris Wallace "thinks" and the reality of Biden reading a highly practiced, likey edited, teleprompter presented short speech is much different.
Anyone who has been paying attention has acknowledged that Biden can capably read a script off a teleprompter without errors. We don't know how many hours or days he has to practice and rehearse to achieve that level of competency. The dementia appears when Joe has to answer a spontaneous question, which is why he isn't answering press questions or doing many live interviews.
