Here are the charges in this very controversial trial. Chauvin was found guilty on all three accounts. They are listed below in descending order of severity: The second-degree unintentional murder charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death "without intent" while committing or attempting to commit felony third-degree assault. In turn, third-degree assault is defined as the intentional infliction of substantial bodily harm. The third-degree murder charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death by "perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life." The second-degree manslaughter charge alleged Chauvin caused Floyd's death by "culpable negligence whereby the person creates an unreasonable risk, and consciously takes chances of causing death or great bodily harm." _________________________________________________________ Which verdict do you agree/not agree with? It is a multiple choice poll.
I tried to take a more 'expansive' view of these charges (thank you for the explanations). With some tongue-in-cheek reluctance, I did vote that Chauvin would be guilty of the manslaughter charge -- given that in my not-very-humble opinion, Chauvin should have gotten Floyd back up off the ground, sprayed his face with industrial-strength pepper spray, immediately thrown his ass into the patrol car, and had one of the junior-officers drive him on to the station where he would be removed, booked, and incarcerated. For whatever reason, though, Chauvin decided to just 'cowboy' the situation right there on the damned city street, and unfortunately for Chauvin, he "took his eye off the ball" and Floyd died. Now Floyd's dead, Chauvin's life is destroyed, and nobody's satisfied -- except for the poor, suffering store owners of Minneapolis who were relieved to see the city 'Fathers' give the Floyd tribe $27,000,000 and thus were able to buy off another TWO BILLION DOLLARS worth of rioting, pillaging, arson, and looting like there was last year.... I see a little perverse humor in his being convicted for all three charges. That seems to me like being stopped for speeding 50 in a 35 and getting a ticket for 50 in a 35, another ticket for 45 in a 35 (which you were doing) and a third ticket for 40 in a 35 (which you were doing). Shows what I don't know.
Yes, it's odd. Apparently the 3 charges run concurrently, not one after another, so you wonder what the point is.
Judging by the video manslaughter is justifiable. I don't understand the 3rd degree murder charge, frankly. Never heard of it before.
I chose 2nd degree, because thats what I would normally have been charged with if I, as a non-LE citizen, had done what Chauvin did to a felon that then died in an otherwise legitimate citizens arrest. I would add that everyone involved in legitimizing choke-holds (or consequently, failing to ban them as they had been in most of the rest of the nation) as an acceptable method of detaining uncooperative suspects in Chauvin's jurisdiction should be included in his charges.
multiple votes are allowed, so the displayed % doesnt matter. what matters (at least as far as the poll matters)- 5/18 say no charges (or none of the above, at least) while 13/18 believe Chauvin was guilty of something. 7/13 of those who see guilt think it was indifference 6/13 of those who see guilt think it was malicious
No, I don't think he's guilty of anything, this is a situation which could have happened to any of us. I expected the jury to go for manslaughter but perhaps I was giving them too much credit.
how many people handcuff a man and put their knee on his neck for 9 minutes, I have never heard of such a thing
no, no good cop agrees with what that cop did, this man was handcuffed, there was no excuse for this convicted cop to murder this man
They had struggled with him twice and knew he was having medical problems and simply wanted him to calm down and relax and await the arriving any second ambulance. After he forced himself back out of the vehicle it was a very rational a pragmatic decision to keep there on the ground and stop struggling. He was 6'4" and almost 250lb. That is not easy to pick up and put in a vehicle and would only have worsened the situation.
He didn't die because he was handcuffed he died because he had serious cardiopulmonary issues which he complicated with the lethal drugs in his system and then deciding he would get in a huge fight with the police.
